99 Jeep Cherokee Sport won't start

The engine is turning over but it will not start. If I push the gas pedal down, then the engine will start, but it dies immediately after I let off the gas. It smells like gas when I do this as well.

Please help,
Seth

I just had the same problem but it was not a jeep product... It was the IAC... Idle air control... It cost 50 dollars and was very easy to change... You might call a parts store and see if your vehicle has one.

Do you have a check engine light on?

Good luck and please report back with your findings

Is there any way to tell if it is the IAC? I don't want to throw 50 dollar parts at this until it starts working.

Re: 99 Jeep Cherokee Sport won't start

Point taken... But remember you are looking for free help on this forum!!! If you want an expert opinion at 70 dollars per hour you call a dealership..

I would suggest to call a part store to see if your vehicle is equipted with an IAC... and if it is maybe you will get lucky and be able locate yours very easily. People on these forums have claimed you can clean them with a spray but I thought 50 dollars was cheap enough to just replace it so i don' t have the problem when I really need to go somewhere important.

THe problem I had with my car was... It would start and shut right off.. What I had to do to get it moving was put one foot on the brake and one on the gas... shift into drive and move until it warmed up (usually like 5 miles)
then it was fine... Once you get moving take your foot off the brake. Mine was held on by 2 bolts and a wire..

Its just something to look at and consider it is by no means a
diagnosis for your vehicle..

Please let us know what you find out

I can keep it running if I keep the rpm above 700 and after about 6 minutes, it will idle by itself. Does this help?

I would look at the CPS (read post at the top) or vaccum leaks first.
