2001 impala blower motor problem

hey ya'll

i am inquiring about a new recent problem where the blower motor on my oh so wonderful piece of crap '01 impala which now has 65000 miles , is kicking on even when car is not running and no key in ignition .

bout week ago noticed it first time when as soon as i put key in igniton it came on before car was even started , and the switch was turned off . this went on for about 10 minutes before it finally shut itself off , and i had then lost temp control 1 , but still had 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 .

now yestrday it also seem to change temp speeds without touching the control switch to where eventually it seemed to be stuck on temp speed 5 , and stays on when switch is agin shut off and car turned off .

i now have to pull the HVAC blo fuse , becasue it seems to be draining battery .

this forum has helped me to determine some of my last problems with this car and am hoping it will help again . i can not afford a new car right now so that means sticking more money into this one . but if you all can help , then i save some by not having to go to dealer again , they charge $125 just to pull into their garage . i am still basically right on schedule , for having problems at bout every 11,000 miles .

Re: 2001 impala blower motor problem

In addition to the HVAC [1-5] fan control dash switch, there's a relay that applies full power for the higher fan speeds -- the relay may be stuck closed such that the variable control can no longer turn the blower off.

The blower motor speed control resistor pack may also be shorted out -- The blower motor, resistor module, and relay are all located under and behind the glovebox -- to get to them, you need to drop the blower motor -- it's really easy, 3 screws -- you can probably replace the module and relay yourself. Since you can't tell if they're bad by just looking at them (unless they look like they've been under water) -- you may just have to buy the parts and save the labor for yourself.

The problem may also be in the fan speed switch itself -- some WD-40 to the contacts under the speed control knob has fixed this for some.

If you have any other electrical gremlins, like the information center dimming/going out, interior light issues, etc... you may need an ignition switch/harness assembly. This switch is a known issue, the contacts start arching and will cause your symptoms.

Re: 2001 impala blower motor problem

NO other known , electrical or otherwise, issues related to this problem . one thing tho ...even with the HVAC blo fuse pulled , if control speed switch is turned on the blower still runs at speeds 2 - 4 ?? how the heck can this thing still be blowing and running with no fuse ?? but as long as switch is off and fuse pulled , it stays off ...

Re: 2001 impala blower motor problem

See, it was easy right.

I'm wondering if anyone has a price for the blower motor itself?

Re: 2001 impala blower motor problem

spinnercee .... price we got for the blower motor itself for the "01 impala was bout $90 at autozone , only thing is most parts for this car have to be ordered special , never have anything in stock around here , or have to get right from dealer and more than likely price will be much higher

Re: 2001 impala blower motor problem

An Update -- I had the water leak on the passenger side that first killed the blower resistor (so the fan/blower would only work on the highest setting), then eventually drowned and shorted the blower motor itself:

At the dealer, for the 2001 Chevrolet Impala [Dec2007]:
Blower Motor Assy. [part #52487083] $177.72
Resistor [part #89019101] $49.50

The part #'s are also the same for the 2001 Lumina and Monte Carlo.
