I would like 2 know why?

I would like to know why the tech has a bad label?
I would like to know why the tech is a rip off artist?
I would like to know why the tech is stereotype?
If a doctor finds a way to make your heart beat better he is a hero.
If a tech finds a way to make your car stop better he is a thief, because he charged you to much for it.
If a doctor finds a way to make you exercise better he is a hero.
If a tech finds a way to make your car/truck handle better he is robbing you blind.
If a doctor finds a way to make you live longer he is a god.
If a tech finds a way to make you take better care of your car and get you to & from your place of employment he must be looking for something.
No I am not comparing a doc to tech as far as life goes.A doctor goes to school for 4 years,a tech goes to school for 4 years.A doc has at least 3 yrs in res,a tech has the rest of his carrer in res.I guess so does the doc. Both spend the same time in the res. When you go to the doc and talk about your issue he had better get it right. When you go to your tech and talk about your brakes he HAS to get it right. This is a big beef in my life.I have quit turning wrenches many times because of this,I think I am on my 4th go round.I have had had it.I am a tech,I do not rob people,I believe what I say,I am not here to string you a line of crap.I am here to help you,I am here to save you, I am here to make your life better.I am not a doctor, but I go to school just as much,I can't save in case of a heart attack but I can make sure you get where your going safely.Get my point?I don't expect this thread to go far but for the ones that read it,I hope it hits home.I am just venting. We, tech's,just want to be treated as intelligent peeps.

Well you are in a service industry, thats what happens when you have to deal with people, you end up dealing with the assholes. This is why I drive a truck for a living, I hate people. Especially stupid people.

Than again, the chevy dealer tried to charge me $300 to fix my sunroof this weekend. I took the headliner out, popped the glass off the track, tightened the screw that was blocking the track and fixed it myself. The "Sunroof Specialist" in town wouldn't even touch it since it was factory installed.

Re: I would like 2 know why?

It sad but, it is one of those industries where some ruin it for hte rest of you. If I find a good mechanic, I do so much word of mouth advertising for him, it's not even funny. My last mechanic (who recently retired) I pointed a good 50 people his way over the last 6 years. The problem is, some mechanics are just scumbags, and some are just incompetant. Either way, both of those types end up costing you alot more money to fix a problem then you ever needed to spend. For the one great mechanic I recommended to everybody, there have been a good 20 around here that have ripped of me, my family, or my friends.

I understand some problems are difficult in nature to fix, and that alot of time and trial and error is necessary to fix it. But some things aren't. And some things are complete scams, that anybody who has ever worked on their own car can catch in a second. I've taken my gf's car in for an oil change (had a coupon and the weather was crappy), and within 30 seconds of them getting the car on the lift, they tried telling me my fuel injectors were clogged and I needed new ones, that my powersteering pump was leaking, and a cv joint needed replacing. Yeah, sorry don't think so. I'm not incompetant, I was just lazy and didn't feel like changing the oil out in hte sleet and snow. None of those parts needed replacing. And it's scams like that, that create a bad sterotype for you hardworking guys. Sad to say.

All I can say is let your work speak for itself. If you truely are fair and honest...your customers will respect you for it, and word will get around. That's the advantage, with so many people not trusting their mechanics, all it takes is one person's recomendation, and you can gain a new customer for life...just like that.

Your rant seems a little...rant-like, almost nonsense. You've contradicted yourself a couple of times, once in the same sentence! But I understand your frustration, you're trying to do a good job and help people, and all they do is mistrust and label you. It happens to everyone in all aspects of life.

HOWEVER...

...med school lasts for four years alright, but that's after 4 years of a university or college, so it's mandatory 8 years minimum to be a doc. To be a mechanic you don't need any years of schooling, just pass the ASE tests and you're certified. That means you can even home-study if you wish. And the human nervous system, respiratory system, circulatory system....are slightly more complicated than a radiator and some hoses, or a gas tank and a fuel pump, or an ECU and some sensors. I'm not trying to simplify or demean your job, but there's a bit more pressure on when someones health or even their life is your responsibility...

There are some bad doctors out there - ever hear someone refer to their Dr. as a "quack"? But as Igovert said, there are TONS of bad mechanics out there. The reason is: You need a medical degree to open a medical practice. The state will not allow it without a degree. But anyone can open a garage and call themselves a mechanic. You don't need any degrees or certifications, just tools and blue coveralls. Smart people know to only go to a mechanic who displays his certifications and credentials on a wall in his office, and sometimes even that means nothing.

I'm good friends with my mechanic - and I've referred many people to him. But I've been in his office when some idiot customer whose car he fixed comes in and tries to blame him for some other completely unrelated problem. Or they say he overcharged for a part...they don't know the difference between OEM and a cheap Korean knock-off. That's due to ignorance on the customers part. Enthusiasts like the people on this site know a good mechanic from one who's full of shit. So don't sweat it, if you're good you'll get the respect you deserve from the people who matter.

On another note: If I had to pay my doc more than my $50 deductible I'd be calling him a rip-off artist and a thief. Those guys charge a fortune just to look down your throat, listen to you breathe and squeeze your balls. Hell, I should be charging him for that privilege.

Dude, kind of off topic, but relevant to that...

I got so screwed at this place that I got my oil changed at. My dad normally does it, but since I've moved out and gone to school, it's hard to get back home to let him. Anyway, I don't know much about my truck, or any automobiles, and I got sucked into a $240 oil change. And then my dad checked everything they did and told me I was the stupidest person in the world. And my oil was low.

My dad will do everything for me until the day he dies...

$240? That's a major one. I recently had one when the guy wanted to change my transmission fluid. I refused because I check it myself and knew it was alright.

It's always good to learn from one bad experience.

Re: I would like 2 know why?

I used to be a tech. I couldnt make any money because i'm too honest. That and the work just downright sucks. And its 12 years of school to be a doctor, 4 premed, 4 med, 4 postgrad/residency.

Sorry dude, its just the way it is, you gotta deal with people. If you're a manager or foreman, you gotta deal with them a LOT more, so be glad you're a little lower on the totem pole.
