Unhappy 95' Escort Quit Running

Okay, this is my father's car I'm about to describe, his is a 95' 1.9L:

1: He was on his way to work and the car was making a blubbing noise and running hard.
2: It quit working, when you try to start it it turns over, but no actual starting occurs.
3: He checked all fuses and wires, that wasn't the problem.

He says it could be the PCV valve, I want a second opinion. What do you guys think?

Thanks!

Welcome to AF!

Did you check the timing belt? If you find out that the belt is OK, then check for fuel and ignition. Either can cause the problem. Also check for compression, it is possible that the head gasket has gone bad and causing your problems but there should have been some other signs before this happened.

Thank you!^_^ He just checked all that, unfortunatly. We can't seem to get it. The check engine light popped on before everything started happening.

Re: 95' Escort Quit Running

It sounds very much like a timing belt... the timing belt is behind a plastic cover and can't be seen without removing that cover. Are you sure he checked the timing belt and not the accessory belt?

Another easy way to check is to remove the 3 bolts that hold the valve cover and lift it off... crank the engine and see if the valves are moving. If they aren't, then your timing belt broke.

He should know the last time the timing belt was changed... if it has been 80-100,000 miles or more, then look further in to this.
