Angry shift lock release..

I have been having a ton of problems with my 2001 Pontiac G.P GT. I found a thread in here that answered one of my questions, but however was unable to find the answer to the other one. I hope someone can help me?? I desperately want to get it in perfect running order.
I have been having problems shifting out of park lately. I have had to use the shift lock release each and everytime I try to drive my vehicle lately and I am not sure what this would be caused by. I am afraid to take it to the shop anymore because we have already put soooo much money into it. Is there anyone with any suggestions to what could be causing this problem??? I don't know where to go from here....I hope it is an easy fix this time... Thank you to all of you who read and try to help us. GT Mamma.....

Re: shift lock release..

Welcome to AF!!

The problem with your car is the shift control solenoid on the gearshift. The solenoid is, unfortunately not a changable item. However, you can remove it completely by removing the console and then removing the solenoid from the shifter. If you prefer to have the solenoid, you may want to contact Ed Morad at moradpartscompany.com for another used one. Also, before doing anything check the wiring to the solenoid to make sure that the wires are correct and that one has not broken.

Thumbs up Re: shift lock release..

Gtp Dad, Thank you so much for giving me the response. Is that something I can do myself or is it best to have someone else unhook the solenoid? Is it something that I should have or is it ok to drive it without it? Thanks again. I will definately look into it though. GT mamma

Re: shift lock release..

You should be able to do this yourself. Just remove the console and you should see it on the side of the shifter. If you don't have kids that could possibly pull the shifter out of gear then you can remove the solenoid and drive without it. If you have children then don't chance it and replace the shifter assembly with a new or used one so that the car can't be shifted out of gear without depressing the brake.

It really won't make any difference if it is there or not. You may have to loosen the shift assembly from the floor pan and then drill out the rivets that hold it in place but with a good drill a set of bits and a couple of hours you should be able to remove it easily.
