Help with Bare Metal Foil!

Hi,

Yesterday I bought Chrome Bare Metal Foil for my chopper I'm doing but damn it isn't easy to apply and manipulate without tearing it.

Anyone could tell me tips for the best way to install BMF without bubbles, tearing, etc...

BTW I didn't find anything that could help me in the "how to section" and with the search.

Thanks very much!!

Handle with care, and use a sharp blade.

Other than that if you have a specific question, we can give you a specific answer.

Agreed, by far the most important thing is a sharp #11 hobby knife. If you're tearing it, the blade is probably too dull. Also, keep the BMF in the fridge when you're not using it--the cold helps keep the adhesive together longer.

Also make sure the surface you're applying the BMF to is free of dirt and especially oil and grease from your fingers.

Re: Help with Bare Metal Foil!

Thanks guys for the tips.
Didn't know about the fridge!
@freakray thanks really good "how to"

But my big problem is to be able to install the bmf on the part without making fold or tearing it.

Re: Help with Bare Metal Foil!

Don't worry too much about folding/creasing it. When you apply it, you should burnish it down (rub it vigorously), and this will remove wrinkles, folds and such.

I've heard rumours about tricks like refridgerating it, but I haven't found the need. My oldest sheet is pushing 8 years old and still going strong, with no special storage at all. Large swaths of it are currently residing on the sides of my Seven.

Crap, are you serious? I had mine out of the fridge for maybe 2 weeks and it's all wrinkled and frays easily when you cut it. I guess I was living in a humid environment!!

Nah, it's probably just that Canada is too cold- but I expect putting it in your fridge has helped.

Re: Help with Bare Metal Foil!

Most definiely keep that blade sharp. The only other advice I can offer is to be very careful with it. When I am doing autot trim I like to use a toothpic to burnish it down, but do not use a lot of force. Start from the middle and work your way to the edges. I don't know about the fridge trick. I live in Arizona and my sheet is well over 2 years old and still works like new.
