94 Ranger dies infrequently

My truck is Physcho! I have a 94 Ranger 2.3 engine, with 5 speed. The truck runs great, BUT occassionally justs quits and will not restart. I have noticed that if I leave it, it will work perfectly the next day. I have changed the air and fuel filter, but it did it again. I checked for fuel and it squirts out of the fuel rail. I can also hear the fuel pump working. Is my truck possesed? HELP

I dont have a code reader but I want to buy one, do I need a OBD I or OBD II?

A few questions to help diagnose. When you said the engine quits 'occasionally", does it have any pattern, does it appear random? Does it quit when idling, driving slow, driving down the freeway? How soon after the engine quits can you restart - overnight, a few hours? While restarting does the engine turn over freely? At this point I don't think you have fuel related problem. More like ignition which due to temperature, something fails. I believe your car uses an OBDI. You can get a loaner from PepBoys and save you the expense ($90.00+).

You don't need a code reader for your year vehicle. A Haynes manual will show you where to place a short jumper wire ... then you just turn the ignition key on and count the flashes of your Check Engine Light. I forget the name of your code level ... but I believe that the codes are two digit ... and all codes are flashed twice for easy checking.

In regards to frequency, it appears random. The last time it worked for over 3 days and it stopped again. It usually starts again if I leave it overnight. It has been hard to diagnose, since by the time I go out to fix it it works perfectly. Each time it has happend shortly after I started driving (less than a mile). The engine cranks and turns freely, it just does not start.

Try this. Get yourself a spark plug probe, or any device that can detect whether you are getting spark to the wires. Do this while someone cranks your engine. If none of the wires get any secondary voltage, then check the ignition module. We'll go on from there.

Thank you DonSor--I checked the psark plugs and injectors and discovered that 2 were not working. The truck runs great! THANK YOU so much for your help!
