Is High Mileage oil Worth it?

My 2003 Impala is due for a oild change. At 215,000 km (134,000 miles) I was wondering if it is worth it to use the high mileage oils? I have just been using standard 10W30.

It is better to change over on a lower mileage engine.
But either way you go remember the oil filter is what keeps the oil clean.
Regular or high mileage oil will get dirty.
The dirt is what wears the engine.
Always use a good oil filter and keep it changed regular.

Re: Is High Mileage oil Worth it?

The only difference between high mileage and regular oil is the additive package. The high mileage oils have more seal conditioners in them to supposedly keep rubber seals and gaskets soft and pliable. It's a marketing gimmick that has limited if any real world advantages.

I was going to do a test run reg oil and see how many miles before the change oil light comes on, and run high milage oil and see If I get more miles before the light comes on...If this is a stupid test let me know and I won't try it.

Re: Is High Mileage oil Worth it?

How does the change oil light work? I reset it everytime I change my oil but it never comes on. I change my oil every 5000 K though. Does the oil light actually test the viscosity of the oil?

The change oil light does not check the oil condition.
The pcm calculates mileage and driving conditions to turn on light.
It usually does not come on untill you have 7K sometimes more or less.
Best to use the mileage reading.
