Thanking you in advance, can anyone explain the installation of the head gasket on my 318is 1994 BMW? i need to know what to watch out for i.e any tricky removal instructions or any special tools required? i would be really grateful if someone has photo's or pictures to help. other than the headgasket set, thermostat and coolant what other parts would i need to buy?

Have the same car, and my headgasket has just blown (62,500 miles). Read on other threads/forum that this is a typical problem with this model/year as it had a poor manufactured gasket. I decided to bring it to a mechanic and I will pick it up this Friday. So if you want me to ask the mechanic for any details, let me know. Also, my mechanic suggest to replace the valves on the head for a few hundred extra. It's costing me about $1,500 with labour . Good luck on DIY

I just replaced the head on my 85 318i. I recommend replacing hoses, vacuum lines and any other hard to get to items that are under the intake. You will need to purchase a torque angle meter to set the torque on your head bolts. They run about $35.00. I strongly suggest you get a good descriptive repair manual and have your head reconditioned at a shop that has been servicing primarily BMWs. You will need to have new exhaust valve guides installed and I recommend you have new exhaust studs put into the head. Ask as many questions as you can think of when you get the head worked on. If you live in Northern VA I can recommend the shop I used.
