Peugeot 307 WRC Monte Carlo '05 Gronholm

Here is my version of the above mentioned 307 WRC. After all the talk about the diecast chassis, and given this is my first build with one, I am still undecided overall. I can see both positives and negatives, though I think the large negative regarding lack of detail means that IMO they are unsuitable for rally kits. For closed circuit race cars, e.g. Le Mans or JGTC, I can see that they would be ideal. The weight of it still feels strange everytime I pick it up.

As for the kit itself, I found it quite nice to build. I used the AcuStion PE/decal set on it, and found it quite frustrating. The PE set is superb, with wonderfully detailed brake rotors, grilles, loads of fasteners and beautiful Peugeot Lion emblems. However, the decals were very poor. I only bought this set for Marlboro decals, and as near as I can tell they were all wrong. Only slightly, but all were the wrong size and the red insert on the large door and bonnet decals was the wrong colour - so they had to be removed. One positive is they do include the decals necessary for a Rally Japan car. So, in conclusion, I would recommend the AcuStion PE set, but get the decals elsewhere.

Anyway, enough carry on - on to the pics. The model is pretty much out of the box, apart from the AcuStion bits.

Cheers, Grant.

BTW, this is the first time trying to host photos from off-site (as AF's upload seems to have died). Please let me know if there are problems.

Nice work, Grant. All is very well done. I especially like the interior detailing. Clean and realistic.

Two thumbs up here Sir!

Very nice. What paint did you use for the red?

Nice model,it looks very realistic.Did you use the decals for the large white stripes along the door bottoms and around the front and rear bumpers or did you paint them on? If you used the decals how easy were they to apply?

Re: Peugeot 307 WRC Monte Carlo '05 Gronholm

Thanks for the positive comments.

Paul, I used the Tamiya TS-49 rattle can for the paint, over white primer + white gloss coat. I had to shoot the red in very light coats, as it wanted to draw away from panel lines. In the end I did 4 or 5 coats and that may have helped get a nice even colour. Two coats of TS-13 before decals, plus one coat after decals, then Tamiya wax.

Steve, I decided to mask the white lines. I used the method of Hiroboy, which was to mask the whole bottom section when shooting the inital red coat, then re-mask to put in the red stripe (he has some nice photos of this process in his wip thread). This is easier than masking both white lines at the same time. Only problem is getting the mask to sit correctly around some of the more complex shapes of the bodywork - there was quite a bit of colour bleed that had to be cleaned off.

Phil, these were the only group photos I took:
