Thumbs up `04 Taurus Brake Pads?

What kind of brake pads did Ford put on my `04 Taurus? I just did a tire rotation at 50,000 miles and when I checked the pads there's at least 1/4" of pad left! Also, there's almost no brake dust to clean off the rims!

Re: `04 Taurus Brake Pads?

Evidently that's not unusual. My 03 has 53K on it and another 10K miles of pad left, maybe more.
I was told don't go for the best or worst, go for the mid-priced pads and you'll do OK. Of course, if you hot rod it and do a lot of hard stops then you 'prolly need the hot rod pads.

I was on country dirt road the other day and stomped the brakes six times and every time the ABS kicked in and stopped it in short order. I think it's good to exercise them once a year anyway and keep the pump working.

You didn't say whether it's front or rear brakes, but the rears typically don't have much dust anyway. When we replaced ours we went with ceramic pads, as they are about the best that you can get, and now that we've used them for a while I must say that they are incredible. Unfortunately they don't make ceramics for the rear (yet). All of your higher end cars will have ceramic brakes. They don't wear down the rotors as much, have no dust, and grip better. Of course they cost a little bit more but well worth it!

Thumbs up Re: `04 Taurus Brake Pads?

Just did the 70,000 mile tire rotation and brake inspection and the pads still look like they have 1/4" left. Heck, it looks like these pads will last another 70,000. The rear shoes are probably going to need replaced before the front pads.

Re: `04 Taurus Brake Pads?

Ceramic pads and ceramic brakes are two very different things. The pads may be a good option for you. Ceramic brakes are the reason that racecars make that fingernail on the chalkboard sound when they stop.

Re: `04 Taurus Brake Pads?

Chevy Eating Taurus sez; "When we replaced ours we went with ceramic pads, as they are about the best that you can get, and now that we've used them for a while I must say that they are incredible."
Good info there and thanks. Two questions please; 1. How much more expensive are they that the middle grade pads. 2. Don't they make a gosh awful screech like lamehonda said? AARRGGHH!

Re: `04 Taurus Brake Pads?

No, your rotors have to be ceramic to get the noise.

Re: `04 Taurus Brake Pads?

"your rotors have to be ceramic to get the noise." Well, why in the name of Pete would anyone want pads that made that awful screeching noise? Maybe some jive turkey with fox tails, mud flaps and neon lights under the car and one of them-thar chain saw mufflers?

Re: `04 Taurus Brake Pads?

ceramic rotors cost a fortune and are usually only found on racecars/exotics

Re: `04 Taurus Brake Pads?

Guess I wasn't paying close enough attention because I thought you meant the PADS were ceramic. I believe the high end regular pads with some kind of metal in them are more apt to squeal & scrape but when it's time I'll 'prolly go with the middle grade pads. OK then, have a nice week end.

Re: `04 Taurus Brake Pads?

Both the pads and the rotors can be ceramic.
