93 Taurus GL electrical problems

First off my horn does not work. When I press either button there is and audible click. Also the wiper switch is acting up, it works but if I jiggle it the wipers turn off and I hear the same funny click from in the dash. Finally When I turn the car off and leave the blower motor switch on in any postion the blower continues to run and recently killed the battery a couple times.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Bill

Re: 93 Taurus GL electrical problems

Have the same wiper issue on my wife's '92 GL, have yet to look further into it but same symptoms with the click towards the right center of the dash, I'd assume is the realy location. Also, the wipers shut off when the turn signal is activated, and then resume operation ofter the signal cancel, which would lead me to think the multi function switch as suspect.

Re: 93 Taurus GL electrical problems

The blower motor circuit should only get power to it with the ignition key in run. The ground for the blower motor is provided through the blower motor switch and fan speed resistor block. For your blower to stay running with the key off, the problem almost has to be due to the ignition switch (not the key cylinder switch).

The horn not working is probably either a bad relay contact, bad wiring from the relay to the horns, or bad horns. The contacts in the steering wheel travel through the steering column via a clockspring. This provides a ground to the horn relay. Since you hear a click, I suspect the relay is actuating and that the circuit breaker is providing power to the relay. The relay coil and horns receive power from the same breaker, so the breaker must be okay. However, if the relay contact is not providing the power to the horn wires, the relay could still be actuating, but not closing the circuit.

Do you have keyless entry, and if so, does the panic feature activate the horn? The panic feature uses the same relay and horns.

As for the wipers, I had an issue on my '93 Taurus SHO where the delay wipers were not very reliable. I popped the wiper/turn signal stalk apart, cleaned the contacts, and put everything back together. It worked fine for the next year when I sold the car. As far as I know, it still works find today. When I went through this process, I took low-resolution photos and wrote up the steps I performed along the way. If you'd like a copy of this, send me a private message with an e-mail address for you that can accept PDF attachments and I'll send it your way.

Re: 93 Taurus GL electrical problems

Thanks guys I'll check those things out. I do not have keyless entry. I'll keep updating as I work. I'm alsoin the process of moving right now. Also thew battery died again the next day even though I turned off the blower, so for the time being I am disconnectiing the battery when I park.
