4wd to 2wd tranny swap
Hello,
I'm not sure if this post is in the right section but, I'm swapping a 97 4.3l 4wd into a 97 2.2l 2wd. The thing is I know I can't use the 2wd tranny, so I was told i need a "tailahsft" to put on the 4wd tranny to be able to use it. Does anyone have a tailshaft or know where I can get on? If i look in the junk yards I need a 4l60e 2wd tranny correct. did 4l60e come on the 4 bangers or only the v6's? That's a lot of question but Im a little confused right now so thanks for any help you can give. |

Re: 4wd to 2wd tranny swap
The 4L60-E was used on everything from I-4s to V-8s. You would not only need the longer output shaft (tailshaft) in the 4WD/AWD transmission, but would need an appropriate extension housing. The transmission needs to be disassembled almost completely (at least down to the low/reverse clutch) to change the output shaft. At that point, a complete "freshening up" of the transmission would be prudent. A complete replacement might be easier.

Re: 4wd to 2wd tranny swap
another thing you may wish to think about is that front axle. it is going to be a lot of dead weight up front. and the oil pans are much different for a 4.3 4wd and the 2.2. The oilpan is made to go behind the axle of the truck and is much deeper. You will run into some clearance issues. I tried doing something similar once with turning a '91 tbi blazer 2wd into a '93 cpi 4wd blazer. Found out that it would have been cheaper and far less headache to break down and buy another truck.

Re: 4wd to 2wd tranny swap
you would be wise to go to your local transmission shop and seek out an individual who does this work on the side. in every shop there is one ususally the young guys. they will know what parts you will need and also supply used parts for your needs. they will also completely rebuild it a whole lot cheaper than a factory rebuild. when looking for such an individual you dont go to front office to ask for him but talk to friends etc. be diplomatic in your search and you will succeed hope this helps.
