Well for better sounds quality and to make sure your wires dont burn up you should use thicker wires. Your subwoofers will sound alot better with thicker wires cause more power can get through easier and faster.

I run 4 gauge to my cap, block and amp and then run 8 gauge to my speakers.

im getting a 800w(rms)amp and a pair of volf 12's(500w rms). right now i have 4gauge to a block splitting it to two 8g. 12v wires. would that still be thick enough wires for my new amp? and what size speaker wires should i use?

that should be fine for your amp, and any size speaker wire is fine, the stock speaker wire that comes in your car originally is good enough for speakers as it doesn't affect sound quality like GSteg said.

what about the wires going from the amp to the subs? i assume i'd need something thicker than those tiny stock wires.

won't make a noticable difference, will be a more direct current, but you won't be able to tell a difference.

i got one more for ya since were on the subject of supplying power. since im gonna be pushing a higher wattage now, is a cap necessary? or would it just stop my headlights from dimming during the night?

how many watts are you going to be running all together? If you're going to be running anything over let's say 500 watts, then you should get at least a .5 farad cap, let's say over a 1000, then at least a 1 farad cap. It does more than just fixes the light dimming problem. Caps aren't that much, you could get one off e-bay for like $40-50 that will solve all your problems.

yep, and Legacy is actually a pretty decent brand. You could probably get one even cheaper than that if you got one that didn't have the digital read out on it. That one's digital, which means it has a little electronic screen that gives you a read out, that's cool. But if you're on a tight budget, the non-digital ones do that same thing and are a bit cheaper.

even worse, the digital readout makes the caps ESR so high that it becomes useless for the purpose at hand.
