98 civic ex shutting off

i had this problem about a month ago where i was driving around 40- 50 mph and the car shut off, about 10 minutes later started up and drove fine for a few weeks. changed the ignition module and everything seemed okay. today i was driving around 50 mph and it started chugging and i pulled off the side and it died , last time i checked fuel pump and everything else, i was having some trouble starting it within the past few weeks, rain and snow and cold temps in my area, any help appreciated.

Could you have water that froze up in the line?
Get some de-icer for gas and try that for starters.
Also, how about the fuel filter, could it be dirty?
Did you ever have your "check engine" light come on?
Most things are covered by that so if not I would look
real hard at the fuel system.

Re: 98 civic ex shutting off

i have gotten gas a bunch of times and this has happened over a 3 month span. the first time i drove about 2 miles before it just shut off. second time same thing. this time about 30 miles before and later in the day it started back up and drove fine for a while. i just had the fuel filter replaced in august. a few things i have noticed is some weird starting patterns, sluggish starts when raining , and cold or if it sits a few days. and where my heater is one side is like dim. i dont know if it would even be something electrical or a sensor? i had the fuel pump and injectors checked . each time this has happened it is like a month apart.

Re: 98 civic ex shutting off

That's going to be a hard one to find, because you can't duplicate the
problem. Most sensors will set off the check engine light and store
a code. Your best bet would probably be to take it to the dealer
to run diagnostics. And even then it might not show up.
Probably something simple though.
My brother had a similar problem for a long time, turned out to be
tree leaves in the gas tank, weird huh?.
It would suck them against the tank screen and shut off the car,
while sitting they would loosen and it would run again.
Took a long time to find that one.
Sometimes the simple ones are the hardest.
As soon as your car stops, you could pull a plug wire and crank the engine
to see if it sparks to a ground.
That may tell you if it's electrical or fuel.

Re: 98 civic ex shutting off

well I don't think it would be the main relay because when that breaks, like you have no choice to replace it, it won't just work sometimes lol(not sure if that makes sens to you but anyway lol)..But just a question like that, did you ever change your computer or mess with the harness that goes to your computer...basically i'm asking this because I remember a while back I did an engine swap for my friend in his 1.6el and when we plugged the computer and redid the harness, there was a lose on one of the ground causing a short to ground sometimes..so a couple times it would just shut off while driving like that..anyway I hope this helps lol

I am having say problem with my 99 civic. Just yesterday the lights begin flickering and the speedometer jumps all over the place. Just put new battery and alternator about 4 months ago and has been fine. Any solutions?
