High RPMs

Hi All,

Just picked up an '07 Aveo LS over the weekend.

I really like the car, but am amazed that you have to rev the engine to 3000 rpm's + to go 65 mph and up.

Also the power steering is a bit stiffer then any other new car I've other bought.

What are anybody's opinons/thoughts on the '07's?

Hey, I only have the 04 Aveo in my garage, but I've tried the 07, it's not really different I think, they haven't made any progress on the engine, steering system, or anything, but yes, the stiff steering is one of the main character of an Aveo. It really helps when you're driving in high speed making it easier to control, but it is a slight heavier when you're trying to park the car compared to other cars.

About the RPM, yes, it can go that high easily, but don't push it too much, it's a mini MPV, don't expect too much from it, it can break down easily if you force it to go above 3000RPM everyday. Just drive normaly kay!

You are right about the high rpms.I have a 06 svm,5spd,that usually revs at 3600rpm@75 mph.Its a shame, but with these vehicles its a major draw back.
Reving this high also hurts fuel economy.By the way what does MPV stand for?

MPV stands for Multi Purpose Vehicle, it's another name for minivans. MPVs are reffered to family cars that can carry loads of baggage. But an Aveo is a mini MPV, it's a small hatchback with smart rear seats (the ones you can fold). If you can't fold the rear seats to the front people just call it a hatchback not a mini MPV.

Mini MPVs don't usually have a powerful engine (not made for speed) or stiff suspension like those powerful sedans and sportscar. It's made for comfort and utility.

Good Evening All:

I have a 4 door LS sedan, no MPV here.

Cruising at 65 mph the engine revs consistently at 3000 rpm.

I will make sure I use only Mobil One oil and filter to help protect from this high of reving..........

I have a 2007 Aveo5 SVM (hatchback/MPV). At 65 mph it is revving at 3,000rpm in 5th gear. The power steering seemed a little stiff when I first picked the car up but seems fine now. Either I'm gettting used to it or it loosened up with a few miles.

Haha, sorry there, I thought you have the hatchback. Well, the engine is the same though, is a small sedan, it's still not an engine for you to push hard. Yupz, I really agree with you, just put good quality oil in it, don't be lazy/late to change it, and your engine will be smooth for ages.

Yeah, I know the steering is quite stiff when you first bought it and it loosens a little by now, it's normal, but when it gets too loose, you should check your tie-rod and ball-joints, and better yet, re-align/spoor your Aveo.

I guess some people here are not used to driving small displacement engines. There's nothing wrong with revving an engine high if it's designed to be run that way. Too many people have the perception that an engine that needs to rev high to make power is a poor one. Not so.

This is normal, and it isn't going to hurt the car. I had a geo tracker with the 1.6, and I ran it @ 3500 to 4000 rpms all the time, on the highway. Never gave me a lick of trouble, and it had 233000 miles on it. The engine is designed for it.
