Headlights turn back on when knob is off
Hey guys I am new to this forum I am from the Lincoln Town Car Forum but I had recently gotten rid of my Town Car and purchased a Jeep Grand Cherokee because I need a 4x4 for where I go to school and we do get a lot of snow. But anyway I love the jeep, but there is one thing that I can't figure out. Normally, when I park the jeep at night, I turn off the headlights and then turn it off. However, the other night I turned the jeep off and then shut off the headlights. However, when I turned the knob to the off position, JUST the headlights turned back on (the parking lights and tail lights were not lit at all). In order for them to shut off, I have to turn the lights all the way back on again and then turn them off. I don't know if this is a short or whatever but I am very savy with cars and I have never had a problem like this before. I don't know if it has to do with the factory alarm system on it or not. But if I want the headlights to turn all the way off and stay COMPLETELY off, I have to shut off the headlights before I turn off the Jeep. I am very confused. It is a 1998 Grand Cherokee Laredo. Can anyone help me out?

Re: Headlights turn back on when knob is off
I would first look to see if there is a headlight delay that might be turned on?
I have a 1999 grand cherokee limited but I have the option to have the headlights stay on after turning them off for anywhere from 30 upto 90 seconds after turning the car off. You mentioned that you are car savy, I dont know if lincons have this feature or not but figure it may be worth mentioning just in case. Good luck and welcome to the jeep family! |

hey thanks for the welcome. Yes my town car did have the headlight delay, however the jeep does not have that feature. I forgot to mention that in my previous post. There is no automatic headlight delay feature for the headlights to turn on when it is dark and for the lights to turn off when the car is off for a certain amount of time. Actually this is the first vehicle that I've owned that doesn't have this feature.

Re: Headlights turn back on when knob is off
actually, i remember going thru the same thing when i first got my JGC. there actually IS a delay in the headlights, even though it isn't mentioned as one of the features.
if you leave the lights on for a few seconds, you'll see that they will go off by themselves. |

Re: Headlights turn back on when knob is off
ok so i put the jeep on run and turned all the lights on. then i shut the car off and then turned the headlights to the off position. immediately, ONLY the headlights illuminated and stayed on for about 90 seconds and then they went off. i guess its a safety feature so you're able to see at night. thanks a lot for the information you guys.
