2000 Alero Ignition Key Won't Turn
The ignition won't turn when I insert my key. This started yesterday morning and I haven't been able to get it to turn since. I've tried both of my keys (including one that has been used only a few times). Any idea what could cause this?

Re: 2000 Alero Ignition Key Won't Turn
Welcome to AF.
Sounds like the ignition switch cylinder is broken. About $175-180 from the dealer. Try wiggling the key in the lock cyl to get it to turn. My GA GT does this sometimes, and I know its bad, just to lazy/cheap to change it until it dies for good. But yours sounds like it needs replaced.

you might want to check if it has a console that nothing has gotten under the safety cable that runs to the ignition.. takes about twenty minutes and could save some cash..just a thought

Re: 2000 Alero Ignition Key Won't Turn
Hey guys the same thing happened to me yesterday, don't pay $500-$600 at the dealer for a new switch.Just go to the hardware store and get a new key cut the gm keys are not coded so any replacement blank will do.have them cut the key alittle over sized and that should get you on your way.(worn teeth on a key is usually the problem)
Also the end of my key was worn so this will cause problems in the switch. |
