A whole lot of things could be wrong but lets start from basics. Does your car start OK and does it idle right? Does it accelerate up to speed fairly well? and OK at freeway speeds? Check out simple things first like tire pressure, alignment, fuel filter, air filter, etc.

What did you mean by the numbers? RPM? That sound you hear when you first start could be that at times your starter disengages before your engine had time to start. Need answers to my other questions.

ok the numbers mean rpm's, and after my truck starts it sounds like the starter is being shredded. if that makes any sense to you. accelerates up to speed quick. also the fuel filter has just been replaced and i put a k&n air filter in it to tire pressure is good and alignment is good. please respond back. thank you.

Remove your starter and I will be willing to bet that you'll find the gears in pieces. Also check the flywheel. Since you said your car starts, it sounds like there still something there that turns your engine but it sounds inconcievable that the starter does not disengage cause otherwise the starter armature will be turning at tremendous RPM can could blow up. In any case I believe your starter is shot.

Re: 1989 ford ranger 2.9v6 bad gas mileage

As I pointed out before, we need to address one system at a time. If you have starter problem having the best mileage won't do you any good. First you have to get the engine running right, that is, idling, acceleration, etc. If everything is OK, then you can address the mileage issue. If the engine or the power train system is not running right, you're going to have lousy gas mileage.
