Engine stalls 89 Olds Ciera
Engine stalls sometimes while idling in driveway and driving down the road.
Fuel pressure is 40psi koeo and 30-40 koer. Sometimes when it stalls it takes hours to restart. Sometimes it restarts immediately. During no start it has spark and fuel. It sometimes sounds like it isn't getting fuel. New fuel pump installed. Pressure is good. I did find the ecm controls the injectors. How likely could it be the ecm or the actual engine computer that is bad. By the way this is a 2.8L . Is there other sensors or common problems with these 2.8 that could cause this. When it runs it runs good. But it could run 5 min or 2hr ya never know. If anyone has any suggestions please help Thanks |

Re: Engine stalls 89 Olds Ciera
Welcome to AF!! The ecm and the engine computer are the same thing. You didn't say if the check engine light is on or not. If it is then you need to get the codes from the computer to see what is actually happening. If the light is not on then I doubt the computer is bad. I would have the throttle position sensor checked as it may be sending the wrong signals to the computer. Also it is possible that the crank position sensor is bad. If they overheat or are going bad then this could account for the fact that it won't restart.

Re: Engine stalls 89 Olds Ciera
Thanks alot for the infor but I screwed up I meant the ignition control module or engine computer. I was told either one could be bad. I did find the problem ?? I hope ??!!!?? Ya know how I said I had spark Well I did at the coils and at the spark plug end. I never checked it at nite we always quit when the sun went down since I don't have a garage. Well late last nite after we tried to get it to quit running all day It never screws up when ya want it to!! lol We finally seen it. A fireworks show under the hood. It was faint but there. If ya revved up the engine it was really bright. The wires were jumping spark all up and down from coil to plug. I never in my life ever seen anything like it. Changed the wires and plugs and haven't seen it yet and to my amazement I made it to work and home without stalling LOL The funny thing you'd think when it was doing that it would run rough. Nope it would do it for about 5min get brighter then all at once the car would die. I do appreciate the feedback tho Thanks again.
