Yamaha YZR-M1 Valencia Edition

This is my next bike project on the bench. It will be Valentino Rossi's 2005 YZR-M1 in the special Valencia livery. This will probably end up being the most detailed bike I've ever built. Maybe I'm aiming too high... time will tell. I will be using resin, PE, additional wiring as well as scratchbuilt parts to complete this build.

The engine is really one of the least modified and detailed parts of the kit. So far I've painted it, added some CF details and just need to finish off with a wash to make everything pop out. I used various shades of Alclad and drilled a few additional holes for wires later on.

The frame will need a lot of modification and detailing. I cut off the molded in electronics box as well as the holder for the meters. This will be replaced by resin parts from TopStudio and wired up.

Great to see a new project! Keep us posted with the progress.
What's your opinion on the Tops Studio set?

Re: Yamaha YZR-M1 Valencia Edition

Thanks Joel... the quality of the resin and included parts seem to be great, but the instructions - or lack of same - could definitely be improved. It's a poor quality photo copy.

I totally agree. I received it today. There is absolutely no instruction on how to wire up the model.

Do you have any additional information about this ??

The only thing I can recommend is the Moto GP Racer's Archive 2005 which has some excellent close-up pictures of every little detail on the bike.

Re: Yamaha YZR-M1 Valencia Edition

So, they give you the resin parts for every possible wiring but not a guide on how to wire them up?? Does that sound like 58 $ worth of additional detail? I hoped that they would include a nice guide as the worst part for me when it comes to wiring is to know where the wire that starts at a specific point would end. Will be nice to see what you make of it though.

Re: Yamaha YZR-M1 Valencia Edition

They include some reference pictures which are nicely printed, but the step by step guide is a poor photo copy... with a mix of Chinese and English language. TopStudio is including shrink tube, wiring, resin and PE with the kit. In addition, you can buy some of their other upgrade parts. You still get a nice upgrade kit for the money and I still like it so far... just wish they would spend a bit more on the instructions. I will do my best to describe and show my steps here, so if I eventually figure it out, maybe this thread can support future builds? As for where the wires end, it will be guesswork is several instances... most are tucked away and you can probably get away with just hiding the ends.

Zeljko...the Moto GP Racer's Archive is the best reference you can get... see post and link above.

I am afraid that when I buy the mentioned book the only pics I get is external. And not of the wiring which I need, because I haven't got a clue how to wire up the computers. So untill someone says otherwise, I'm not buying this book

Re: Yamaha YZR-M1 Valencia Edition

There are pages of detail photos in the book including the naked bike. You can get a very good idea of how to wire the bike. Of course, sometimes it's easy to see where a wire starts but not where it ends.

Re: Yamaha YZR-M1 Valencia Edition

Great work so far. I have the Top Studio detail set for my M1 and I have the same problem as to where all the wires go, my plan is to have a good guess and the rest will be hidden under the air box. I'm waiting for my copy of the Moto GP Archieve to arrive. I will keep watching this thread and others I seen for reference so plenty of pics please . lol.

Re: Yamaha YZR-M1 Valencia Edition

Per the instructions from the TopStudio kit, I added about 1 mm of styrene to entend the air intake.

I then went on to work on the swingarm. These are the parts before modification.

I cut off all oversize parts and replaced them with photo etch using a mix of TopStudio and CrazyModeler parts. I also closed off the inside of the swingarm using a piece of styrene sheet that I cut to size. Finally, I shaved off the molded boltheads and replaced them with aluminum bolts from RB Motion.

The frame was also painted black with a coat of semi-gloss varnish. I added CF decals to various parts including the inside of the air intake. The little plate on side of the frame will be used to hook up cables and connectors. It's a PE piece from the CrazyModeler PE set and I only added carbon fiber decals to it and finished off with two aluminum bolts.
