Transmission issue

Hello all I am new here and wanted to first introduce myself. I am from Pittsburgh and I drive a 98 GTP and 99 WS.6. My fiance has a 2002 Eclipse GT.

Now to my problem/issue. On the 2002 Eclipse it has the 3.0 and 42K miles. The issue is it seems at certain times the transmission slips. While travling at speed around 20-30 mpg going downhill, if you very lightly press the gas pedal the RPMs will free rev a little bit and you'll feel it catch. Also when going up slight hills when you don't press the gas pedal all the much it will do the same thing on the 2-3 shift. It started a little while ago and latley it seems to have gotton worse. I checked the fluid and it is spot on. Since it is getting close to 50 K I wanted to get the fluid flushed but just wanted to see what you guys thought. Maybe a sensor?

Re: Transmission issue

There is a forum dedicated to the 2000+ Eclipse. Find it and ask your question there, they will be able to help you more than we probably can.

Re: Transmission issue

Moved to Eclipse 2000+ section...

Now onto the problem... It sounds to me like it is an automatic. Yes? If so, first thing I would do is change the tranny filter and fluid. This is a very common problem that can be solved with this cheap fix. Now if it doesn't solve it, well then you might have to consider a bigger problem like a torque converter going out... Now if its standard then it sounds like a clutch issue... More details please.

Ok, yeah I would change your tranny filter and fluid first then and see if that solves your problem. If not then it could possibly be something more serious such as your torque converter going out. (Yours is exactly the same thing it did in my mom's Buick when it went out and it actually destroyed the whole transmission with her driving it like that for too long.)

Yours does sound like a worn out clutch plate. I would check all your fluids and such first though before replacing it.

Re: Transmission issue

01Spyder- My 2000 GT 5 speed does the same thing sometimes...it drives me crazy because sometimes I am not even giving it gas to accell, just cruising, and it jumps rpm and then catches. My clutch is shot to hell, and I will be replacing it shortly along with a new flywheel and LSD. It had better fix the problem because I really dont want it to be a trans issue.

Flush the trans and replace the flter like crow said and add a trans cooler. (had the same problem, but noticed it only happens when im driving for a while. I flushed and replaced the filter and that didnt fix it (did notice it took longer for the slipping to start) then added a trans cooler and it hasnt happend yet.

Re: Transmission issue

The spec 2+ is the same kit I am getting (from www.ultrarev.com), and I am also getting the lightweight option with it, and the Fidanza Flywheel...The guy I talked to on the phone told me that the streetablity is still pretty good, and If i go FI in the future I know I will have the clutch for it.

Re: Transmission issue

I am not too sure about Eclipse's but a Spec clutch for a LS1 based car is a joke. There are soo many horror storries on LS1tech.com. Just something to think about.

Back to my problem with the tranny in my fiance's eclipse. I plan on having the fluid flushed asap...prob this weekend. But the weird thing is it didnt start acting up like this until I had the car repainted (sweet famous Mitsbushi black paint problem) and they disconnected the battery. The idle was really bad for a little while and went away. I read in the owner's manual and it said if you have the battey disconnected for over 15 miutes the transmission may not shift smoothly for the first few shifts. Well it has been almost a week and it seems to be getting worse. It is only when you accelerate slowly (like in traffic or what not)where the rpms go to about 2K. I wonder if one of the body guys conected the battery wrong (like connecting the negative first) and damaged the electrical system.

Re: Transmission issue

If you are replacing the clutch the entire assembly should be looked at, and at a minimum the flywheel should be resurfaced (much like brake rotors should be resurfaced when you put new pads on). This will allow the new clutch disk to bed properly with the flywheel. If the flywheel is warped or cracked, or worn down too much it NEEDS to be replaced, otherwise you will run into clutch problems down the road (clutch will wear out early, or the flywheel could get destroyed depending on the condition). Because the labor to install a clutch is so high, I would say just bite the bullet now and buy a new flywheel and have them install it when they install the clutch.

As for the tranny issue. I would say disconnect the battery again and see if it cycles better after the engine idle is set (yes, it will idle low/funny for a while like the manual says it will, but it should get better). Otherwise it might be a transmission control unit issue....if the problem continues after you recycle the car I would take it to a tranny shop and have them do a diagnosti check (a lot of places do them for free).
