Pen, company ink

Broke up with my girlfriend of a year on Tuesday. Things hadnt been so good for the last couple of months so we decided to call it a day. Sad, but life goes on...

Quite quickly, as it turned out. There's this girl at work with whom there's been a lot of flirting recently and we kind of hooked up last night... Now, I know you shouldn't dip your pen in the company ink, but I seriously dig this girl. Another but: it feels very early to be jumping into something again... As you can tell, I'm in three minds.

Who here has been involved with someone at work, and how bad was the outcome? I work on the trading floor in an investment bank so come Monday morning I'm sure there will be some rumours flying round as there were some work colleagues there who saw us leave together. To make matters worse, one of my friends from work was this close to asking me to back off her, because he's been nuts about her since she joined...

What the fuck did I get myself into?

I'd be more concerned at how your friend/colleague is going to react. He apparently really liked the girl for a while and you kinda swooped in there and took her out from under him. The worst thing that could happen is having an ex-friend working against you in the same office...especially over a chick.

Your treading on thin ice dude. Good luck.

QFT. You can't even claim ignorance (in regards to knowing he was keen on her).

Happened to me, cept I didn't work with her and I honestly didnt know my mate was keen on her (hell, didn't even know he knew her)

Goodluck!

Re: Pen, company ink

i wouldn't know about workplace relationships, but as for your buddy, if he was talkin' about her since she was hired, he shoulda made a move a long time ago. my

Re: Pen, company ink

let her know (in nicer terms) that she was a rebound. You just got out of a relationship, you don't want to be in another one... etc etc. unless you don't like your job. then if you pursue her, i suggest quitting before you get fired.

Re: Pen, company ink

don't do it.
at least not right now.

i) if you're asking then you're hesitating and are aware of the entirety of the situation.
ii) your friend/colleague; if seeing the girl with you getting friendly doesn't spur him on to do something active towards her, then he may never will. Backing off a bit (not saying you need to cold shoulder anyone) might give him a chance to see (considering that there is obviously some attraction between you and her) that she ain't interested in him. In any case, don't give him an extra excuse to not like you.

then again;
iii) After work hours is your own time. Do what you like during that time and well, no one else really has a right to say what you can or cannot do.

and totally unrelated
iv) just because you now might have an extra 23K to fling around ain't no excuse to spend it wining and dining women.

A rebound is a rebound is a rebound. If it happens at work, it'll be worse. Tell her the truth and lay off for awhile. If you're still into her, and she into you in 6 months (or whenever you're ready to make another go at a relationship) then game on.

Re: Pen, company ink

Yes, Rebound is the best way to put it. Just tell her you were "out of sorts" with your emotions or whatever the case you feel need be.

Goodluck and becarefull...

Met a girl at work, we quit the jobs we were in, took up the licence for a pub in West London and ran that together for a year, got married, moved to New Zealand, bought a house, had kids, drifted apart, separated after 20 years.

Moral of the story - workplace relationships never work.
