Trading in?

Alright, well a local dealer has a $3000 minimum trade in promo going on. I have around $3000 to spend on top of the trade in. If I tell the seller than I'm doing a trade-in, will the price be jacked up? Also, could I have some tips on what to do when buying a car, this is my first time from a dealer, and I don't want to get a higher price than someone else when buying a car based on my age. I'm seventeen, so please give me some advice..

did you read the fine print on the ad. like it probelly said up to 3k on your trade. but if this is your first time going since you are 17 have your dad go with and besides sometimes componys will need a co signer because of your age.

I have all of the information confirmed with the dealer. It's $3000 minimum. I'm an emancipated minor, so everything I'm going to do is on my own. I just need advice on negotiating and ensuring I get a fair price.

Dealers always have these promotions going on. They also have the push, pull or drag it in, we'll take anything on trade and give you at least $##### for it. Well all they do is just jack up the asking price by what ever to show you a trade allowence of that amount. Do think a '78 chevette that doesn't run and is 90% rusted out is worth 3 grand. No way. It's just a sales pitch just ignore it. Dealers I worked for always advertised these kind of offers and I would just tell the customer that it's just crap. You want me to ask 11 grand for that 8 grand car so we can show you 3 grand for your old lawnmower no problem but you know it isn't real. The taxable trade difference is what you are paying and it really doesn't matter if I show you a trade allowence of 3 grand or 3 bucks.

Put it this way when a dealership says a minimum of $3,000 or push pull or drag we will give $3,000 no matter what does that make sense? If you know your car is worth literly a couple of hundred dollars how can they give you $3,000. The answer is there is automatic profit put into the price. If they have a guarantee you have to tell them about it up front, you cant negotiate the price then try to throw your trade in. Yes there will be 2 different prices for the car being sold, 1 with trade and 1 without.
Buying a car is just like anything else if it sounds to good to be true it its.

They've been doing things like this for years -- there is no maneuvering around it. Somewhere in the fine print it will say that the trade must be announced before initiating negotiations.



Instead of manuevering, find a more reputable dealer. The one that I work for marks up vehicles $1200-$2500. They have been doing it this way since 1954 and it hasn't stopped working for them. If someone buys at sticker, they didn't get a bad deal. Our discounts during negotiations range from $500 to $1500.

Take your $3000 and trade to a dealership that people respect. See if they have anything they can trade straight across. If not, wait until you're of age to finance and get on a first time buyer's program. With that much cash down, you should be able to get into something.
