99 Grand Am GT just CUTS OFF

Twice recently while driving the car has just stopped running. The last time ALL the dash warning lights came on, the doors unlocked, and the car just stopped running. Got stopped, put it in park, tried to start it and nothing. A few seconds later it started right up and ran fine.

Thoughts??

Re: 99 Grand Am GT just CUTS OFF

When does this happen such as when slowing down, speeding up...? When the car cuts off, after when you go to start it up, is it acting like the battery is dead? Then after a few tries its fine?

If this is anything to what i described, My guess would be your battery cables are either loose, or not making proper contact. There are other possiblities such as bad ground, bad battery, or an assortment of possible issues. This is my first guess though. Good luck.

Re: 99 Grand Am GT just CUTS OFF

I will double check the battery connections tonight, but I don't think that is it... last time I check they were fine, even though it has been awhile.

1st time it happened I was driving, going down hill.... no warning lights, no dashboard lights, no nothing, the accellerator just stopped responded and lost power steering... coasted down the hill a ways and started to pull off the road.... the entire time I had kept pushing on the gas just to try it, and suddenly it started going again....

2nd time was at a stoplight. At a dead stop. all dash lights came on, doors unlocked and car cut off... would not initially start back, then did after about 20 sec....

Sounds like a passlock problem or your ignition switch is on the fritz.

When it dies and you attempt to restart, does the security light blink/flash ?

What is a passlock??

I did not notice the security light either time... but that does not mean that it wasn't on. If/when it happens again I will try to pay attention for the security light..... as I am avoiding traffic of course.

Re: 99 Grand Am GT just CUTS OFF

passlock is a security feature(haha) that is supposed to keep someone from stealing your car.
This has been an on going problem for several models of GM.
Do a search in this forum for "passlock" you'll see what kind of troubles others have had.

I think you need to have the car scanned to see if thier are any trouble codes stored.
Then post them here and we'll see what we can do.
