Transmission Slipping
Have a 98 GP GTP , 97K. The other day it would not move in drive from a dead stop that went away. Now it slips when it shifts into 2nd gear. All it does is rev up , no power. Went to Advance Auto for a scan because we have other problems and SES light was on. Got code history dtc PO742 torque converter circuit stuck on. What do I need to do next ? Or should I say what will go wrong next. In the last month we replaced fuel pump resistor, idler pulley on super charger and its at the dealer right now getting the belt tensoiner assembly replaced. Also power steering pump was whinning so I added conditioner to quiet it down but will have to replace before long. Oh ya AA said alternator is weak ,so like I said whats next ?

We have owned this car 5mos. dont know if it has had tranny service. Fluid & level fine. No electrical problems yet and battery is fine. Advance did the test on the alternator because we thought it was making the whine noise we were hearing. Im 90% sure it is the power steering pump after adding conditioner and the noise went away. The tranny slipping has me wondering if it is a bad solenoid that controls shifting as refered to on other posts. What do you think ? Also mentioned on post you could unhook TCC and will run fine if you dont run long distances. How do you do this and is it safe ? |

The TCC P0742 code would not cause it not to take or go into gear. I would not try to unplug the lockup. Slipping when shifting may be internal trans problem. You need to get a good repair shop put it on a good engine/trans capable scanner and check it out. Good luck and let us know how it goes. MT

Unlike other older transmissions you cannot easily disable the torque convertor clutch (TCC) commands coming from the PCM module on a 4T65E autotransaxle. All signals input/output through a 20 way connector and that connector has to be connected for the transmission to work properly.
Since you are unsure of when the tranny was last serviced I would go with a pan drop service replacing the ATF (Dextron-III) and screen filter first. It is highly recommended not to get a flush. Also, when pan is off you can inspect for any possible excessive metal shavings and clutch material to determine any internal damage.
