Check Engine Light
Lately, after everytime I fill up my 740il the Check Engine Light Soon comes on. It usually turns off after a couple of days, but now it is staying on. Any thoughts?? Thanks!! Mike D

Re: Check Engine Light
The 'Oil Service' indicator and 'Service Engine Soon' light are separate, as far as I know. Usually when a check engine light comes on, there is usually a problem that should be looked into.
The list of problems with that light goes on forever, so a scan with an OBD scan tool will come in handy at this point to help you start in the right place. Although it's more expensive, a local mechanic or the BMW Dealership will be able to scan the OBD for you to scan for the codes. If nothing shows up, the Service Engine light can be reset. If there is a problem and you fix it, but forget to reset the light, the light will go out after a few restarts of the engine. I hope this helps.

Re: Check Engine Light
Well, I couldn't find the OBD 'pin jumper' reset method, but apparently another way works, but I don't know as I haven't tried it myself.
Disconnect both battery cables for approx 5 mins. and connect each battery cable together, turn on your hazard/warning lights, after 5 min's reconnect the battery. This will clear the memory and all codes and should reset the engine light. After you go about this reset, drive lightfooted for about 3 hours or so as the computer has to relearn your driving style. If you are aggressive, it supposedly learns your aggresive behavior and adapts to that. If your a granny foot, it'll learn your granny footed ways. Hope this helps...

Re: Check Engine Light
The red "service engine soon" is not the same as the amber "check engine" light. It simply means it's about time for a regular tuneup/service, usually done at regular intervals like 50k miles or 100k miles. It won't be exact, as it comes on a bit before the scheduled service is supposed to happen, but based on the last time the light was turned off. (for example if the 50k service was done at 58k miles, then the light would come on again at 106-108k). Haven't had it yet on my '98 740 (though I'm anticipating it as it nears 150k miles) but just had that happen on my '95 Range Rover.
