Whining somewhere in engine !

Have a 1998 GP GTP bad whine coming from motor. Removed S/C belt still hear noise. (Now I cant get belt back on , whats the trick to reinstall ?) Could this be power steering pump ? Have noticed a black streak of oil on the under side of hood looks like its above the S/C but dont know where its from. Also earlier today car would not move when put into gear a few hours later it would drive but still had the bad whine. Have changed the oil in the S/C within the last 30 days Any ideas where I should start to look ?
Two weeks ago we replaced the fuel pump resistor and saved some bucks thanks to this forum (BNaylor) ,its full of awsome info. Hope someone can help.

Id say power steering. The power steering wined in my mote. I had a freind whos a mechanic put some JB something or other in it, took the wine away. JB = justice brothers. Check out and see if they have something for power steering lubricator?...

This sounds like the snout bearing in the supercharger is going bad along with the seal. I suggest you have this checked as the bearing may seize and cause you some issues. You can purchase a snout rebuild kit and rebuild it yourself although you will need a press to replace some of the bearings. The leaking seal is what is causing the black streak of oil that you have seen. I would look at the back of the pulley to see if there is oil there too.

How does that mean its a supercharger bearing going bad? If the Supercharger isnt spinning then it shouldnt squeek.

I would check the fluid in the Power steering....

You might want to check your harmonic balancer also. I'm changing mine today because it squeels really bad especially when it gets wet or is really damp outside. It took awhile to figure out where the noise was coming from, but they can make alot of noise when there going bad.

Re: Whining somewhere in engine !

Added nicholes power steering cond. most of noise went away. Must be bad pump.
The belt tensioner on the super charger is viberating and makes clunking noise now anyone replace this assembly before. Any info would help.

Re: Whining somewhere in engine !

Even though the car still makes the noise he is hearing with the belt off the oil he is seeing is probably coming from the supercharger itself. As for the noise you are correct. If the belt is off then it probably isn't the bearing in the supercharger. My mistake! I would suspect that the tensioner pulley on the regular belt may be the culprit since they are known to go bad.

Re: Whining somewhere in engine !

The tensioner pulley assembly was bad on the super charger . Replaced and cluncking noise went away. The whine I thought was the power steering pump was really a bearing in the tranny. The tranny started to slip going into 2nd gear on the way to the shop to replace the tensioner. The tranny was toast by the time we got there. I hope the black streak under the hood was from one of these problems and not something else. This all seemed to happen so fast and without any warning signs , is that normal ? Anyway $1700.00 for a new tensioner and rebuilt tranny . Now we have to tackle the ABS and TRAC Light that are now on.

Re: Whining somewhere in engine !

The abs and trac light are probably due to a bad wheel sensor/bearing. Common issue on these cars. You will need to find which one it is so you can replace the correct one. The sensor/bearing is all one assembly so you will need to replace the entire hub on the affected wheel. Someone with an ABS capable scanner should be able to tell which wheel sensor is bad.

Don't feel too bad about the price on the tranny, mine cost $2400 to rebuild. It was totally shot even the differential.
