6.0l rough idle/almost stall

so i was driving around town and my truck started to die, but didn't quite. i have a fuel pressure gauge and it's running at 58-60 psi, and no drop in fuel pressure when the accelerator was depressed. i opened up my air box and hear this strange wheezing sound... like air restriction. give her a shot on the throttle and it clears up, wait 30 sec. and it's back. idle is about 300 rpm or so but i believe this is caused by the restriction of air flow. the first time it happened i pulled the top of the air box off and it sounded like a bent push rod, wheezing in and out, shut the truck off and fire it back up and it goes away, no codes or anything. i'll try the TB cleaning but as far as the IAC Valve, i don't have one seeing as it's all TBW (i think looking for some direction.

thanx
lee

Re: 6.0l rough idle/almost stall

Yea, your truck should be idling at around 500-700rpm, definately not 300. I would have first suggest the fuel pressure regulator and fuel pump, that was the issue my truck had with almost the same symptoms you described.

Not sure about the wheezing, and I hope you figure it out. Let us know.

Re: 6.0l rough idle/almost stall

so after a few quick checks i also noticed a weird smell... kinda smells like fuel but not really, more naptha gas kinda smell, i run high test all the time in my truck and shouldn't be having any "bad fuel" issues, just filled up my tank yesterday. fuel pressure regulator is an AEM, so it should be working fine. fuel pressure is steady @ 58-60 psi, throughout 500 RPM to 4500 RPM. it seems to run fine until i put my foot in it and then it seems to start doing it's thing. now for some issues: the exhaust isn't "tight" as i scabbed together the bits and pieces of the exhaust from the 4.3l. could this cause some "back pressure" problems? i've pretty much built this truck so i know there are no fuel line pinches as it's mostly new bent SS tubing. the motor has 15000 KM on it, oil is great, coolant is fine, all the normal stuff is good. one last thing, what exactly is this "carb cleaner" ppl say to use to clean out the throttle body? should i be looking for something specific? thanx again for looking at my ramblings.

Re: 6.0l rough idle/almost stall

any auto shop should have a can of carb cleaner. Says on the label "carb cleaner" (though admittedly they probably spell the whole word) or possibly even throttle body cleaner if your lucky. It's just a solvent to clean up carbon and other gunk. Personally, I don't know if one brand is better than another, just stick to a brand you've heard of and it should be fine. That could be your problem, but if so it's seriously dirty. Just to state the obvious, but is your air filter dirty?
