Pan's Labyrinth

you. must. watch.

on par with the LotR trilogy, seriously.

Just saw it tonite, its really a good film. definitely check it out, very sad, bittersweet ending. If you're into fantasy and stuff, you'll love it.

Re: Pan's Labyrinth

saw it, loved it, recommend it to anyone who doesn't hate fantasy and who is looking for something with more depth to it than your average movie.

what do you think? figment of her imagination or truth, i think she made it up and used her fantasy as a way to escape the horrors of her life. she needed a way to escape her current situation and this provided it.

Re: Pan's Labyrinth

I'm going to see it at the only theatre in the whole western part of the state that is playing it. Gonna take the Mrs. for her b-day...

Re: Pan's Labyrinth

Yep, you'll definitely appreciate this movie.

Beef, this is what I think:

Spoiler for answer:
IMO, you can argue that it was real, that fantasy was infact reality, even though everyone else was ignorant to it. How else did the fig tree start flowering again, right? How else was she able to get into the Captain's room even though the door was locked, right? How else was that mandrake root healing the mother, and its death negated its powers, right? personally, I do think that much of it was an escape from the horrors of reality, but there were too many reasons to be just that alone. Why not have something like that exist, hmm?

Re: Pan's Labyrinth

I agree. I think the parallel worlds between reality and fantasy blended almost too well together. The violent reality was in-your-face and I think that's what I liked the best about the story. The cinematography was ridiculously awesome...

Re: Pan's Labyrinth

Definitely a quality flick. For some reason, I thought Pan's voice actually came off better in Spanish. While I have no problem with subtitles (and indeed prefer them when the situation calls for such) at first I was kind of hesitant -- although the fact that it was a movie set around a spanish military garrison kind of required such a treatment. For the first 5 seconds of spoken dialog from Pan though, I was questioning it. Then I immediately and completely decided I really liked it.

Also it was nothing short of sheer mastery in the way they blended the whimsical fantasy, gritty reality, and macabre events and characters -- three themes that are generally major opposites of each other. Definitely a welcome change -- it's a shame it isn't more widely available. Out of the 4 major theatres within a half hour of me, it was playing at only one.
