Fuel Pump??

1994 Sub K1500 , 150K

Yesterday noticed slight hesitaion when driving home. Parked. Today, wont start. I poured a little gas in the TB, and it starts right up, but wont continue. I can not hear the Fuel Pump when I turn on the key, and know from reading, that this is about the time these go. Here are my questions, before I pull the tank:

What fuse controls the Fuel Pump?
The only one that looks close is marked - INJA (10 AMP, Far left, one up from the bottom..) Is that it? Also, where is the relay, if any.

Does this sound like a pump issue? I am really suprised it died in my driveway, although I wont complain - Better than getting stuck somewhere.

Any help would be great!! Thanks!

yep, sounds like the pump went bad. one thing you can try is to go under the tank and kick it real hard several times. i've seen this make the pump start working for awhile sometimes enough to get it home or to a shop.

ya I second this motion ,or you could use a rubber mallet ............LOL.

i'd say fuel pump...and you got fuses and relays under the hood..and kicking the tank i've never heard that one before...lol....

I got my info from a GM garage . it does work on ocassion and it is worth a shot ,however with that being said if it does work the pump should be changed ASAP as it will likely crap out again and there may be no second chances.

Yep, looks like the Fuel pump.. I kicked it and beat it, but it aint buzzing.. Now, here is problem #2..

I removed all the crap around the tank, after draining it.. and that sucker is stuck in there. I have read you sometime have to pry it, once all the bolts and feed are removed because it sticks to the insulation.

I just broke a 2X4 trying to pry it. I am so pissed. Anyone have any ideas, or done this before. I will destroy the tank before it ever moves an inch.

I even ripped out the carpet to make sure there were no bolts on top, which there are not.. and the saw on the forum that this sticking issue is not odd. One suggestion was a big dowel. I pryed front back and side, and will probably just call the tow truck tomorrow.

My neighbor solved this problem on his 96 Suburban by cutting a trapdoor above the fuel pump. If you do this make sure that you make the hole big enough and in the right place. Use a cut off wheel in your angle grinder.Watch the sparks-remember there is a gas tank below there.Cut three sides and leave the 4th side for a hinge. When you are done just get some thin strips of aluminum to screw it back down with and a big tube of silicone. The carpet will hide it all. Good luck.

I think that is a great idea. My BMW has an access hole under the back seat, which saved me from having to drop the tank when the seal started leaking..

Now back to the Sub -
I did get the tank out - finally. The trick, is to take a big flat screwdriver and pound it in betweeh the chassis and the tank where the padding is, at the front of the tank. All the prying in the world from the side failed, but as soon as I broke the "seal" at the front part of the tank, it came right out.

Tested old pump, does not work. Bought a new pump, tested in out of the tank, works great, so at least I didn't do all this for nothing.

Since the tank in out, I will buzz through the floor board, and give myself an access hole. Yeaaa I will have fun this weekend.

Glad you got it out--Good idea to cut the hole now when the tank is out. I will do that on my 94 Sub when the fuel pump goes out.

How big of a pain in the butt is tank removal verses cutting a trap door

It all depends--is your gas tank full?--How many years and layers of rust do you have? Yes it is easier to cut a trap door on a suburban.Or you could just pay the 400 to 800 dollar bill to your local shop to do it for you.

wee its about 12 degrees and i got 15 gallons of gas in the pig. 458 bucks to have it done. part costs 75 im in the wrong business

Ouch--Good luck. If you decide to cut a hole in the floor, remember there's gas under there. jigsaw with metal blade--locate fuel pump location accurately before cutting!

drill pilot holes in the corners of the trapdoor you are going to cut, then jigsaw.

A trap door. Hey guys we work hard to keep our Burbans looking good and now you want to cut a hole in the back. why would you do this and have exhaust enter through that hole. Yea I know you can seal it, Yea right.
Keep the tank area clean, try a pressure washer every once in a while. I have removed and replaced fuel pumps in 3 suburbans. Use a motorcycle jack and it is a breeze. Just remember to get a good pump strainer and filter and replace all three at one time. Just my 2 cents.
