Elantra fuel filter

I am trying to replace the fuel filter on a December 02 GLS Elantra.
Instructions seen online speak of the the fuel assembly being held in by 8 screws. Mine is held in place by a plastic ring/clip - how do I remove this.
Have tried turning the ring but not wishing to break things did not apply a great deal of force.

Re: Elantra fuel filter

Well, on hmaservice.com is says to "Remove the fuel filter mounting bolts, then remove the fuel filter from the fuel filter clamp. "

Don't know if that helps. Mine is a '99 so it has an in-line fuel filter up under the hood. Hope you get it figured out.

Re: Elantra fuel filter

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has had trouble getting the fuel filter undone. I have a 98 Lantra, but I imagine it would be quite similar to the 99 model. I have removed the top fuel line and loosened the nut below the fuel filter but can not manage to remove the filter from the bottom fuel line. Has anyone had similar trouble, or got any suggestions apart from trying again with more brute force?

Re: Elantra fuel filter

If I remember right the bottom of the filter has a nut attached to it (ie: it's part of the filter itself) and it attaches to another nut. We had to take 2 wrenches--one on each "nut" and twist in opposite directions.

Re: Elantra fuel filter

Hi, and thanks for your reply. Sounds exactly right, I had a wrench on the 'nut' that is part of the fuel can itself which gives some leverage to undo the nut that is on the fuel line. Once loose though the nut on the fuel line only has a couple of turns before going tight again, I guess it moves back on the fuel line to far and stops. Keeping the nut on the fuel line in the loose position a couple of turns back from tight I expected to be able to remove the fuel line from the filter, but I could not budge it no matter how hard I tired so wasn't sure if I had missed something and didn't want to lean on the fuel lines excessively.
