Unhappy Service vehicle ,abs, and trac off lights

Tonight the sevice vehicle soon light, trac off and abs all came on. My husband suggested it is a ground wire that's off. According to what I read from other postings this isn't correct. What could it be?
I have alot of driving tomorrow.
BTW the vehicle is a 2002 Cavalier.
Thank You.

Take it to Autozone or some similar place and have them put a scanner on it. This is a free service and they will be able to tell you what diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are being set that are turning on the malfunction indicator lamp. Until we know what the DTCs are, we can't help much.

They said it is my left rear wheel bearing and my Oxygen sensor. The dealer wants to charge $640 for repairs. Is this unreasonable?

Yes it is possible, make sure you get a guarantee from them that this will correct you problems though.

Re: Service vehicle ,abs, and trac off lights

Their explanation is plausible, since the rear wheel hub/bearing likely contains the wheel rotation sensor. Lacking a signal from a wheel sensor, the ABS and traction control systems should deactivate and illuminate a warning lamp. The oxygen sensor suggestion may simply be due to their analysis of another stored trouble code indicating any number of emissions or drive cycle problems.

However, given the cost of a heated oxygen sensor (usually under $90 and ten minutes to replace) and the rear hub/bearing/sensor assembly (usually around $240) they must anticipate some difficulty in replacing the rear hub, since the remaining appriximately $270 would be labor for that procedure.

That seems maybe just a bit high, and probably enough so that it's worth asking for a parts and labor breakdown estimate before authorizing repairs. If they can explain it to your satisfaction, go for it.

Re: Service vehicle ,abs, and trac off lights

Personally I shy away from having the dealer work on my cars. I use a good independent shop, where playing "beat the clock" isn't more important than fixing the problem. Sure he gets a decent buck, but the problem is always properly diagnosed and fixed the first shot. I would at least go to one to get a 2nd opinion.
