Question 97 Trans Sport idling rough, won't shift out of 1st

I have a '97 Trans Sport with auto transmission.
Today, I pulled out onto the service road, gunned it to get up to 45 (not pedal to the floor or anything!) and I heard a popping noise, engine revved really high and I never got out of first.

Check Engine Light started blinking. I put on my hazards and drove slowly home. (Luckily, I was not very far)

Now when I start it, it takes a second to engage and then idles VERY roughly.

For background, the van has been running really well. Only issue - it has been idling low and a bit rough.

Any ideas as to where to begin with this, I would very much appreciate.

Thanks,
Lesli

Pinpointing the cause now is speculation. 1st you need to read that CEL code(s). Some parts retailers will read the codes for free, like Autozone. Ensure they read engine and transmission codes. Write down the exact code numbers and come back here for more hints.
