Wont Start!!!!

92 Probe 3.0 LX

I have been having a problem with my 92 Probe LX starting. It isn't starting now! It cranks and cranks and hits every once in a while like it wants to start but it just wont. When it use to start it would run VERY rough for about 30 or so seconds and i would have to keep my foot on the gas to keep it alive, then once it started reving normal, a big puff of BLACK smoke would some out the exaust. I hooked up a Fuel pressure gauge to see if the pump was going out and when i turn the key to cycle the fuel pump it jumps straight up to 40psi (which is good right?) I have replaced the fuel filter, distributor, rotor, plugs and wires about 10-15,000 miles ago. I haven't pulled a plug out to see what condition it is in yet but i will. Do you think it could be the fuel pressure regulator? Any ideas would be GREAT! I need to get it running so i can sell it because i need some extra money.

Thanks,
Steve

Re: Wont Start!!!!

rough idle + black smoke = running too rich. pull some plugs and see if any are fouled. is it a stock fuel pressure regulator?

One way to test the fuel pressure regulator is to pull off the vacuume line and turn the key on. If fuel comes out of the vacuume port....the regulator is bad
