Co-workers

They are driving me crazy!!! I'm a prepress tech, so my whole entire job is to tone photos, paginate commercial print products, place ads, build classifieds and catch other peoples screwups. And yet without fail the people get mad at ME when they screw up!!!

I got yelled at Tuesday, because Kevin had been shirking responsibility and passed of some of his work to another guy, and that guy messed up. Kevin KNEW about it, but didn't bother to tell me until it was WAY too late to fix. And when I noticed the problem, and asked about it, he goes, "Oh, don't tell me you're going to whine about the black-and-white photos on a color page, are you." Well yes, it's my #*&$ing job to catch errors!!!! And if I didn't need this job I would've punched him in the windpipe for not telling me earlier so I could fix the problem. The worst part is that this particular error (using b/w photos on a color page) reflects poorly on the whole paper and especially makes me look bad because I am the photo tech. And then, today, it wasn't Kevin and gang who screwed up, but the ENTIRE REST OF THE NEWSPAPER STAFF. I had to do 2 shifts of work in 1 shift, and the whole thing was complicated by 18 problems that shouldn't have happened, ranging from improperly built ads to improperly mapped ads to non-spell-checked pages (who needs to use spellcheck at a NEWSPAPER anyway?) to people outright sabotaging the paper.

The thing that bothers me most is that no one bothers to do their job because they know that if they don't, it doesn't matter, I'll fix it all in the end, and on deadline too. Why should they do their jobs if I'll do it for them?

I really really like this job most days, but today I'd love to tell the whole staff to go @*&$ themselves.

I don't expect replies to this, just needed to vent. Thanks for reading. :sigh: Feeling a little better now.....

At my job, i'm the ONLY SINGLE PERSON DOING THEIR JOB RIGHT! Which of course means i'm the whore of the building, being tossed from place to place, whereever its getting backed up. If the trucks arnt being unloaded fast enough, I have to jump into one to kick ass, if the loaders arnt loading fast enough and are getting killed, you guessed it, I haul ass over there and load twice as fast as anyone else there with the best quality...and I'm also sorting the packages, sending them from the unload to the load side. I've been called a "utility man" because nomater where theres a problem, I can fix it. But think of this, you have a sit down job with corperate bs, I have to do manual labor (for now), I move 40,000+lbs a night, in the form of 4,000 to 8,000 packages in 4 hours. Some are 5 lbs, some are 150lbs. I would -KILL- for your job, you have a college degree I assume? Yah, see, i'm just a big ass guy, sure I have some brains, but obviously not enough...that and i'm young. Oh, did I mention I get blamed for whatever area is bad? Also if there are misssorts on the sort isle (packages sent to the wrong load area) I get blamed for it? I'm one of many trying to get into managment right now...if I susceed, well, life will be better, but untill then, lemme tell you, be thankfull for your job, as hard as it is dealing with some arses.

Oh, I neglected tomention I work a graveyard shift, from 1055pm to 3am up to 430am

me, now, after work - :buck

that really sux boingo.

I know what having incompetent co-workers is like. In fact I have a somewhat incompetent boss at the moment.

He usually will organise a demo of our online marketplace but conveniently not tell us techies until the day before. Then ask 'oh I need this and this setup for tomorrow'!!!!. and for us that would take 3 days to setup and test properly. anyway i digress.

I find that you need to not give an inch when it comes to people like that. They can't take blame so they get mad. and just make a note of mistakes they make so that when "ass-grinder" time comes around, you've got a full load of ammunition.

my 2cents anyway.

Sorry to hear about that mess. I'm glad that we have some management here that notices when people aren't pulling their weight and cans their ass.

Sorry I'm not the only one with problems...BTW the shift I worked last night was 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. with no break. More of the same tonight because our imagesetter machine broke and we have to do 3x as much work because we have to do everything the old way.

My boss took pity on me today and bought me a pizza so I'm feeling better. It will be hell tonight but I can get through it.

BTW, I'm 20, no college degree, no college at all besides the College Algrebra I got credits for taking in High School. I am a self-taught Photoshop junkie, and am now the main photo-toning tech at our newspaper, which has a circulation of 30,000. They hired me about 10 months after I graduated high-school, and the only job experience I had was telemarketing. The bad thing is that the wages are low, which is because of the area I live in. I know I am very lucky to have this job and 90% of the time I love working here but the rest of the time, it's hell because bad things happen in 20's around these parts.

And yes, Darkness, part of my job is a nightly "log" of all the problems, last night it was 10 inches long and a lot of people got in trouble. But they will behave for a week or so and then start getting lazy again...

Sorry to hear this problem is so common to everyone.

Dear Boingo...

Believe it or not, nearly all companies have a reward system that recognises people who do excellent work and get stuff done on time and on spec.

Sceptical? No way you say? My Company can't have a reward system like that!

Well this system is so well ingrained in every company we don't even realise it when it operates.

People who do excellent work and always get stuff done on time and on specification get rewarded with MORE WORK! That's right, work gravitates like a big magnet (or a black hole) to folk who do their job well. Whenever there's some work, people are rational human beings and they always seek out someone to delegate it to.

Supervisors will give work to someone who does it well because it means less work for them to inspect, correct or rework. Coworkers who can't be bothered or aren't motivated know that if there is a 'star' working with them they can 'slack off' because they know the 'star' will fix it up...

Collective Sigh.

The only advice I can give you is to look at doing some training courses in Photoshop etc (that demonstrates that you have a formal knowledge of the software). Also try to get to trade shows (hopefully you can network with other firms).

The other thing you could look at doing is try to get in touch with some of your customers (ad agencies etc) when you work with them. Be socialable and subtly network with them, it doesn't take much - just make sure they know it was YOU who sorted out the problem with the ad format etc. Hopefully next time they are looking for a Mac Tech you might be in the frame.

Good Luck.
