Unhappy Really bad gas mileage

I have a 2000 ford ranger V6 and The last time I filled up my tank I only got 12.6 miles to the gallon?? I got better gas mileage with my old V8 dodge ram.. What could be the problem? I have a clean air filter and I replaced the plugs about a year ago?? Can anyone help me with this problem.

Re: Really bad gas mileage

I have the same problem with my 97 4X4 only worse. I get 11mpg. I have changed plugs, filters, evap parts, oil and everything. I also had the cat convertor checked. I have 123,000 miles but it has plenty of power.

it is all how you drive. im not sure where you are from but if you have been getting snow that will drastically reduce mileage due to wheel spin...whether intentional or not. what are you usually getting on your ranger? it depends on the engine and if you have four wheel drive. also was it mostly city or mostly highway?

ever get the number code for the check engine light? cause at 120,000 miles warrants the o2 sensors to be changed and that would hurt gas mileage and wont necessarily show an engine code if they were bad.

Re: Really bad gas mileage

Assunung that there is nothing drastically wrong with the engine, and it sounds like you followed the recommended maintenance requirements, then it seemed like driveability factor, that is, tires, extra weight, speed, acceleration, terrain, constant stop and go, etc. I have a'99 4,0L, extra cab with a shell. Routine driving (combination of street and freeway trips, prudent driving) I get about 18 MPG. On long freeway trips I get about 21MPG.
