Muscle car comparsion Test

I remember year one did a bunch of comparsion races with a list of aout 20 or 30 muscle cars. How they did in the quarter mile and so on. I was wondering if any of you could track down this list and possibly post it. This was sometime ago like maybe 2 or 3 years ago.

Re: Muscle car comparsion Test

i stumbled onto this forum while getting ready for work.
i don't know the official results, but i can give you my experience from back in the day.
i had a 69 chevelle ss 396 and did my share of racing in the long ago,
and while for most match-ups the driver mattered in the outcome, one car (actually there were a few of this one car around ) won practically every time no matter what they were up against.
70 and 71 hemi cuda's. i distinctly remember 4 over the years i participated.
i would have loved to tell you it was my car, but.............

p.s. i forgot about the 68 hemi that came two nights and left undefeated.

in any case, i believe the era reached it's pinnacle with the hemis'.

The 70 cuda 426 Hemi placed 3rd in the quarter mile. Some late 60 Vette placed 2nd and 1st place was taken by a Shelby Cobra(which they say is the fastest production car to ever come out of Detroit assembly line for it's time). I thought the Cuda would have taken it because it had way more dominant horsepower than the Vette or the Cobra. Horsepower is really not the main thing it comes down to. Torque, gearing and weight of vehicle are the essential things as well as horsepower.

Re: Muscle car comparsion Test

Well I don't know about the Hemi having superior power to either of the other cars. No doubt it was a fast and very powerful car, but all 3 were rated at 425 HP, but the competition package on the Shelby was rated at 485HP in a lighter smaller car. It is no surprise to me that the Shelby won or that the corvette was number 2.

I've heard from many that the 426 Hemi had over 500 Horsepower back in the day the nascar restriction limit for a street vehicle was 7 litre and 425 horsepower. Chrysler Corporation would play factory number games by simply lieing and slapping on a sticker saying 425 Horsepower. Everyone back then knew if you dynoed it or just stepped on it that it was well marked over 500 horsepower.

Just the other day on the speed channel they had this Mopar Special a guy said the exact same thing. Another source I checked out in some Mike Mueller book who said 426 Hemi engines had Monstrous heads a humongous combustion chamber which was rated at a laughable 425 horse. The fact is Chrysler just wanted to make an affordable automobile being the fastest(which I would say they pretty well accomplished adding the Torqueflite transmission into the works).
