Trans Temp Gauge Installation

I have a '96 burb and I'm going to install a trans temp gauge to monitor trans temp.

The typical gauge installation would include running wires from the gauge installed in an A pillar pod to a temp sensor (i was planning on using the test port on the 4L60E).

I've heard you can tap the gauge right into the PCM to gather trans temp data rather than running a sensor. Can this be done? I thought there was not a PID for ODBCII for trans temp. If it can be done, is this method preferred over installing a sensor? If not, is there a better location for the sensor w/o tapping into the pan?

thanks in advance,

t~
