I have a '01 Olds Alero that all of these lights are coming on: the ABS, Service Light and Low Tarc all come on at the same time. Speradically the Brake light comes on as well.
It all started after hitting a pot hole that ripped te ABS sensor wires out of the passenger side wheel hub. I replaced the wheel hub and all seemed to be fine for about 2 weeks then it started all over again with the 3 lights popping on. So I took it to a dealer and they said that it was the wheel bearing that was bad so under warranty I recieved another hub and put it on which worked fine for about 3-4 weeks. When it started coming on again my wife made mention that it felt like the ABS motor was coming on since she could feel a vibration in the pedals as well as a noise. I have had it hooked up to a scanner and it keeps saying that it is the passenger side wheel hub that is throwing the code (I can not remember what exactly the Snap-On scanner said) and all of the wires look good as far as I can see until it starts to go up in the motor. I just put yet another wheel hub on today as well as back brakes (good thing for Lifetime Warranties on Murrays and Autozones wheel hubs) but the lights came back on not even 2 miles down the road. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I have played with the ABS wire and wiggled and jiggled it while car is on and the lights never pop on then. I am at a complete loss right no on what else it could be, unless it is the ECBM which I am not sure if it is built right into the ABS pump or not (the unit located under the battery tray). Any help and or suggestions will greatly be appreciated. I have tried everything that I can thik of with out tracing and running new wires from the wheel hub to where ever they may go. |

Re: Alero ABS, Low Trac, Service Light and Brake Light coming on...
Hard to say whether it is just bad repair parts, wiring or the EBTCM module.
I would go with the scanners suggestion a hub is bad but switch to manual troubleshooting and double check all four wheel sensors. Ohm out the wheel sensor on each hub to make sure it is not bad. Look for around 1K ohms across the wheel sensor contacts hub side. Then check wheel sensor speed output. 100 mv to 1.0 volt. Next step is to ohm out the wheel sensor circuits/wiring from the electrical connector to the connector on the ABS Modulator/Motor Pack. From there to the EBTCM module which is located under the dash.

Just had the same problem with my daughter's 2001 Alero, V-6. (43,000 miles) , Not only were one of the hub / sensors bad but the wiring on one had bad corrosion inside the wire from where it plugs into the hub connection. Inside the wiring it had actually turned to a black like powder. I was able to get the new connection with a couple feet of the wiring instead of buying a whole wire harness. I was advised that the wiring going bad inside the coating/cover is common. I am sure my cold weather area (Michigan) and the salt adds to problem. You could actually bend the wire back and forth and find shorts in it. No problems on hers since it was fixed. Good luck with yours

Re: Alero ABS, Low Trac, Service Light and Brake Light coming on...
I ended up taking it to a private shop and had them check the ohms, They pinpointed the hub and wire in no time. It was not at home for service when it went bad or I would have hooked up my scan tool to get a read.
The Moderator bnaylor may be able to advise if you can get that read done at a Murray's or Autozone parts Store. I have not had to do that before. The ex-GM mechanic I get advise from said the main hub problems and wiring are most generally always in the front. About $150 at parts store. I saw some on eBay for $70 plus shipping. They are not hard to change, you just need a little patience. I have the shop manuels that help alot. This forum has been a great source for help also. The Moderators for the sites are generally right on or guide you to the right area to look. Last edited by johnsonwingnut; 02-07-2007 at 10:43 PM. |
