2000 Malibu - Starting Issue

Over the last couple of years, from time-to-time, my 2000 Malibu won't start. In the past, all I had to do, which will sound strange, was to straighten my wheels and it would start. I figured there was something with steering linked to the ignition system. As of yesterday, this fix no longer works, also noticed that my steering column does not lock, if the wheel is turned without the key in the ignition. I thought it use to do this.

A fix that has worked sort of in the last 24 hours that I found on this forum, has been the wait 10 minutes with the key in the "ON" position so to reset my Theft System. FYI my Theft System lite does not blink, it stays lite & does not go off. Took me 10 minutes the first time to start doing this and 25 minutes the second try. I am pretty for certain that my starter is fine. I read in another forum about the a guy with a similar problem, he mentioned the neutral safey switch. If it is my Theft System, is the fix expensive? Wonder if I could get a remote starter to bypass this problem.

BTW. When I say it won't start. I mean nothing happens. It does not crank.
The battery is fine. When in the "ON" position, all my car accessories work.

Re: 2000 Malibu - Starting Issue

You have the dreaded PK2 failure. For the dealer to fix it'll be about $450. For you to hack it to always work it'll be about $10 and about 2 hours (including getting the parts)

If you do a search on here, you'll see what I've come up with on how to bypass this system using a simple resistor from Radio Shack.

Re: 2000 Malibu - Starting Issue

"Well, I just bypassed one the other day too. What I did was cut the yellow PK2 wire, stripped a little off of the black reference ground wire, put one lead from my ohm meter on the black ground wire and the other lead on the wire yellow wire going to the ignition switch. Then I put the car in gear and cranked it over. When you do that, the switch will send out what code it has been using. It came out to something like 6.21ohms. I then got some resistors that were about 6.25 and connected one end of the resistors to the cut yellow wire GOING to the BCM and the other end of the resistors to the ground reference wires. It started right up and the theft light went off."

This is a copy of how to permanently bypass the the theft system.

Yep. I posted that a while back. Someone should make it a sticky.

Re: 2000 Malibu - Starting Issue

Well I spent $386.00 to have it repaired at the dealer.
Parts used in the repair were a key ignition cylinder & a code kit. Hopefully that fixes it.

Yep, it'll be OK for now until it does it again and trust me, it'll do it again. To help things out a little you can try to keep as few things on your keychain as possible. It usually seems there is a high failure rate with people that have a heavy keychain.
