93 Caprice Classic LS - heater blower

Hi!

For the past 2 months the heater blower fan has been working intermittently. If I tap hard or kick under the dash on the the fan will kick on and work. It will normally run until I either shut the heater off or turn the car off. It feels like there may be something preventing it to run properly. I understand that in order to change the blower it will involve taking part of the dash apart?? Are there any other steps to try first before taking on this project?? Can it be lubricated or cleaned?

Thanks

Re: 93 Caprice Classic LS - heater blower

I have a very similar problem. My '92 heater fan does not blow fast enough when I switch it to high. I had the same problem with my '84 that was easily solved by swapping out the resistor pack. I don't even know where the resistor pack is on the '92. My current problem recently got worse. The fan stopped working all together, but the next time I drove he car it worked. Now it's a crap shoot as to whether it will work or not. I think I have a faulty ignition switch to boot. Can anyone show pics of where the resistor pack is on a '92?

Update:
Fan not having enough air flow = AC evaporator plugged solid and not letting any air through. Was told fan was switching off to avoid cooking it.
Car not starting on first turn of key (lately needed many turns) = faulty $35. ignition switch.
Fan still turns on and off at random. Fan accessed by removing panel below glove box in dash. Moving wires going to fan causes it to come on. Kicking dash panel works too.

Change the fan. Its easy, took me about 20 minutes. Drop the lower dash, which is held in place by a few screws.

You have to be able to get under the dash, laying on the passenger floarboard helps. The fan is held in place by 3 or 4 screws, comes out with a little tugging. Once you have the fan out of the way you can take the opportunity to check the wires and duct for any debris.

Good luck, post pics if you do it.
