Cleaning carbon varnish.

Has anyone got a hot tip for cleaning up coked and baked oil? The stuff that has been burnt to a carbon varnish.

Specifically turbos and cylinder heads so the materials are steel and aluminium.

Re: Cleaning carbon varnish.

Hot dip

You could also try CRC carb cleaner, its pretty corrosive.

Re: Cleaning carbon varnish.

if you have disassembled the heads, just use a wire wheel on a bench grinder to buff it off.

Re: Cleaning carbon varnish.

If the motor is apart, take the pieces to a local engine rebuilder and he'll know how to clean whatever you bring in. Hot tanking steel heads always left them really clean for me.

I'm cleaning a motor which is together and turbo pieces which are apart.
What I'd really like to know is what do engine rebuilders use in their cleaning tanks.

I can't use a wire wheel due to too many tight corners, hand work will take a long time unless I can find an appropriate cleaner.

Re: Cleaning carbon varnish.

i've only even known people to use paraffin to clean engines, at college we have a cleaning tank with a stiff brush which the paraffin's pumped through.

Re: Cleaning carbon varnish.

parraffin sounds good does it work that good? we got this stuff called ozzy juice same system as the parrafin i dont think it works good enough on carbon though its a enzyme but startoff with a parts washer its a big dish washer and look into a chemical dip thats aluminum safe the ones for cast iron are awesome but your aluminum will disappear if not i can amagine theres a fiber type scuffer or wheel out there that wont tear up aluminum but make sure because some can take out steel

Thats it!

Give them a ring, see if they have anything.

The guy that used to service east auck was very friendly, if its the same guy he will either have something, or know who does.

I know the stuff well, just never considered cleaning engines with it.

It's available from most protector safety shops (for some random reason).
