Unique Battery

My LS is a 2001 and still has the orig battery. Got a slow crank today and decided to look online at how much. Unfortunately I can't seem to find it on the sites I'm checking. Does the LS have some sort of funky, dealer only battery? Does anyone know where to find a replacement? Cost?

Re: Unique Battery

Yes - since it is mounted in the trunk and the trunk is part of the passenger cabin (not sealed away from people) the LS uses a 'sealed' battery that attaches to a vent tube. the vent tube allows gases that form during recharging to vent out the cabin behind the bumper cover.

most come with a 650amp - but you can pick up a 750amp for a few $ more.

I belive mine was $89 - from the dealer - which is not a bad price.

Re: Unique Battery

A good battery for rear-mount is either Optima RED/Yellow top, they are deep cycle gel-cel and hold a great charge. 2 of the best batteries around.

Re: Unique Battery

Actually - they do not recommend placing an Optima in the cabin - since they can expell gases (much less the normal batteries - but still...)

This may be an option for us - > http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc1500.htm

I measured my LS battery - OE tad longer and wider - so this should fit.

I have no direct experience with this - but several shops use them for heavy audio/video installs - and like the ads - the batteries can be install right next to the passengers.....

Quote:

Odyssey combines in one box the characteristics of two batteries. It can deep cycle as well as provide serious cranking power. These batteries are capable of providing engine cranking pulses of 1700a for 5 sec as well as 400 charge/discharge cycles to 100% depth of discharge (DOD). A typical battery can do one or the other, but not both. With other batteries such as Optima, you must decide between a deep cycle or a high power starting battery, but Odyssey does both.

The cranking power of a Odyssey battery is double to triple that of equally sized conventional batteries, even at low temperatures.
Also with simple constant voltage charging, there is no limitation on the inrush current. This means you can charge your battery with as many amps as your charger, alternator, stator, or generator can put out as long as it doesn't exceed 15 volts. Lead acid, gel cell, and other AGM batteries can only accept 10amps per hour during charge.

Quote:
The ODYSSEY® Drycell battery combines in one box the characteristics of two separate batteries. It can deep cycle as well as provide enormous cranking power.

These dry cell batteries are capable of providing engine cranking pulses in excess of 2150A for 5 seconds as well as 400 charge/discharge cycles to 100% depth of discharge (DOD). A typical starting, lighting and ignition (SLI) battery can do one or the other, but not both. Conventional batteries are either a sprinter or a long distance runner; An ODYSSEY® battery will do both — provide short duration high amperage pulse or low rate long duration drains.

Re: Unique Battery

The Odyssey batteries are pretty impressive. The local go-kart place used them in their electric karts. They would fast charge them between races (8 minute sessions) and the karts had pretty severe in-rush draws at dead stop acceleration. I made a few runs with a current probe and data-logger installed when troubleshooting other issues for them. Also, since they run up to 8 karts in a session on a pretty small track, they are subjected to pretty amazing shock and vibration from crashes, etc.

A lot of power in a small, lightweight package.

Re: Unique Battery

hmm, where did you hear that, I've been told numerous times that Optima Red + yellows can be placed in cabin. I'm not questioning whether who's right I just haven't found any evidence showing otherwise.

Re: Unique Battery

They can be mounted in all sorts of poitions - since they will not leak - but right from their web-site:

-When used with a properly regulated constant voltage charging system (such as an alternator) the OPTIMA will usually not emit hydrogen gas. However, gassing can occur when charging at higher voltage levels or in extreme high temperature conditions.

Re: Unique Battery

Looks like the best - I called for a quote - $210 plus shipping - thats a total of about $245 for Ohio. Heck, I'll probably pull it out when I get rid of this car and put it in my next...

Re: Unique Battery

My son had a problem finding a battery at a reasonable price for (our) LS and all the local auto parts, Auto Zone and Advance did not carry them. I found the new chain O'Reilly has the 650 and 750 A for 69.95. Scroll down on the link below.
