gearshift selector button hard to push in only in park
1997 v6 automatic trans, well the cruise control was not working on the car, after i got underneath the dash i saw a peice disconnected i assume it was the deactivator switch as it is on the arm of the brake pedel, i plugged it back in and it fixed the cruise control but now makes the gear shift selector button hard to push in from park only, if i disconnect the deactivator switch the cruise control will not work and the button on the gear shift will push in just fine, im guessing there is some adjustment i need to do but im not sure what exactly it is.

I assume that the switch on the brake pedal involves the safety solenoid. There is a solenoid that is supposed to prevent the car from being shifted out of park unless the brake pedal is applied. Either you have some "creative" aftermarket wiring going on there, or something is seriously fubar'd in the circuit.

i believe that this may be a piece that just goes bad.
my dads honda oddesy had a similar problem, except that there was no button, so it simply refused to shift out of park. i think it was pretty cheap to get fixed. it was probably under warranty tho.

ok well i finally got around to it and i fixed the problem, the 2 wires going to the brake light switch were broken and brittle, i put new wire and connectors on and plugged it in and now everything is fine with the shifter, but after a test drive i got under the dash one last time to make sure everthing was nice and secure and realized both wires are hot to the touch same with the two connectors, i think its been hot the whole time thats why the other two wires were melted, is this normal? the brake light switch is like 4 years old.

definitely doesn't sound normal. Wires should never be warm to the touch. There are multiple circuits involved here, you need to isolate which circuit(s) are in question, where they go, how they are fused, what fuse they are using, and if there have been any other modifications to the system.
