1/12 ferrari and lamborghini models

Has anyone built and completed any of the 1/12 Ferrari F40's, Testarossa's (Revell or Monogram) or Lamborghini Countach's (Otaki, Testors or Doyusha).

I see a few threads where some have been started but never seem to be completed.

I would love to see some pics of completed models, and to hear about the good and bad points. I have the Doyusha Countach, Revell F40 (soon to get the Testarossa), as well as a few other 1/12's, ready to be built, so any info on these would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Colin

Re: 1/12 ferrari and lamborghini models

I've seen the Revell Testarossa. It's not detailed as well as the 1/24 Tamiya. Generally speaking, to make large scale kits financially realistic to produce they simply don't have the level of detail you would expect. They can be excellent bases for superdetail projects- but of course it means alot of work. Absent stuff that just wouldn't be missed in 1/24 can be very obvious if it's not there in 1/12- and as I said, often less is included than in a comparable 1/24. They could be alot of fun, but with as long as it takes me to do a detailed 1/24, I'd never finish one....

Re: 1/12 ferrari and lamborghini models

MPWR - definately agree, the detail on my Revell F40, while good, is not what I would call superdetailed, but I like the idea of going to town on it, adding all the bits and pieces.

Probably the most detailed one I have is the Countach this is an awesome effort from Doyusha (followed closely by the Airfix Bentley), , everything is there, right down to the wing-nuts on the carbies! Though still room for improvment.

I'd like to do the Testarossa as I am also re-building my Pocher 1/8 Testarossa and have a huge amount of reference material for this.

They will take a lot of time to fully complete. As you say, a lot of the finer details that may not be required in a 1/24 kit, almost have to be there in a 1/12. I've had my Pocher Testarossa for over 4 years and I never really considered it complete, this is why I am rebuilding... to add a lot more detail.

As mentioned though, any pics or previous experience would be great with any of the 1/12 kits. I know what I want to achieve, and 99% know how to aciheve it, but is always good to get opinions from another person's perspective.

Re: 1/12 ferrari and lamborghini models

Many years ago I built the engine and chassis of the Otaki Countach. Everything fit beautifully. The tire are beautiful. The engine is a piece of art. There is room for improvement though, mainly wiring and minor misc. parts. I didn’t get to the interior or body of the car. I’ve heard more than one time that there are some fit problems with the body. Since back then everything was brush painted I stopped the project. Two years ago I got the Doyusha (same kit). I started the engine but I’m not going to finish it anytime soon. One big concern for me is that the dashboard dials are molded in. Very tricky to paint those right. Decals would have been easier to work with. Also the wheels will not come off once installed. After all this years one of my top five kits. A real beauty light years ahead of it’s time.

Dingmyride...I too am building my Pocher 1/8 Testarossa...you mentioned you had some ref. material...Do you have any clear photos/pictures/diagrams which show all the plumbing/wiring/mechanisms between the intake manifolds on top of the engine....I am really struggling with my injector pipes to the fuel distribution headers and also the accelerator mechanism/linkages...

Hope you can help

Cheers

Phil

Re: 1/12 ferrari and lamborghini models

HI Phil,

I feel your pain brother! Hard area to get good info on.

Which one do you have? I've got the Blackstar.

I will go through my images tonight to see what I have. I've got the Testarossa owners / service manual here on disk somewhere so will see what pics are in there as well as my other reference material.

Are you into buying the transkits for the engine or preferring to make your own parts?

No doubt you would have seen some of the websites catering for the Pocher cars. Have a look at scaledetails.com (yes... a shameless free plug because I supply him with some machined parts for the Testarossa and other Pocher cars), but a nice guy to deal with, and you can also get mini transkits for the interior (with grilles, switches etc) if you are not into paying a fortune for parts.

Racer917,

I agree on the detial of the Countach, very detailed, but always room for more. I have not studied the dials that closely yet, but if you find an easy way of tackling this job be sure to share I also want to come up with a better looking throttle linkage system (photoetched???).

Might have to figure out a way to make the wheels removable as I would like to display cars (ones with good suspension and brake detail) with a wheel removed.

I have also heard about the fit issues with the body, but I have not started mine yet so I guess I will find out.

Would also be great if there was a 'body-kit' for this to bring the shape up to
the Anniversary or QV5000s shape. Might try to pick up a half built one off ebay (has to be cheap) to experiment on.

Re: 1/12 ferrari and lamborghini models

I have built the Monogram 1/12 Testarossa many years ago. I must say it is not very detailed compared to it's size. As MPWR said a tamiya 1/24 is almost as detailed.

The plastic in the body and other parts is really thick and it feels quite simplified for such a big kit. The vents in the grilles and engine hood are not open etc.
No opening doors. To superdetail it would be a lot of work I think. You would have to thin down a lot of thick plastic.

The fujimi 1/16 Testarossa is lightyears more detailed although it has some fitment issues as all fujimi 1/16, doors especially.

Can't really provide any pictures of the 1/12 but I remember the proportions of the body was good and it looked pretty decent from 1 meter distance

Am trying to detail as much as possible...some scratchbuild...some bits from Stefan at scaledetails.....Just want to be as accurate as possible.

Have just transferred to 1/24 scale for a rest........really wierd, very small, but oddly more detailed....would love to go for a go on the 1/12 scale but need funds to continue with the Pocher...

Good Luck to all you large scale builders!!!!

Phil

Hey Phil,

I found my Testarossa Service Manual disk, has some great pics but too big to email (50+ MB). What's your address, maybe I can post you one - send me a private message if you prefer for this.

Thanks.

Colin.
