Ok, I've got a challenge for you guys!

Well, it all started about a week ago when it was really cold (im talking -40 to -50) but anyways... I made the stupid mistake of not plugging my car in over night. In the morning I tried to start it and not surprisingly it didn't start. So I plugged it in for a few hours and later that day I was able to start it, but it was really having a hard time. So I let it run for about 15 mins and I started rev'ing it and it would get to a certain point (2000 maybe 3000 rpm, I dont have a tachometre) and it wouldnt go any further, it just wouldnt let me... It would make a sound something like this.." rrrnnn rrrnnn rrrnnn" even when i held it steady. So I thought I would just take it for a ride because I thought it was just really cold. And even when the car had reached its avg temp it wouldnt let me go over a certain speed in each gear (for ex. in 1st gear i could go about 10mph, 2nd - 20mph, 3rd - 30mph, 4th - 40mph and finally 5th gear, I couldnt go over 55mph) The car would basically start to "jump" constantly and not go any faster. Ive talked to many people and they have never heard anything like it, and even several mechanics have no idea. They think it may have something to do with the fuel, (whether its the pump or how its being filtered I have no idea). They changed the fuel filter and it ran fine for about a minute and started doing it all over again. Thats how it was for a couple days, but now its actually getting worse. Now, sometimes when i start it, it will just die on me right there, so i have to give it gas for it to start running sometimes. Kind of like my old car which wasnt fuel injected, so Im leaning towards a fuel problem, how about you guys? Thanks.

Wow, I've never heard of anything like that before either. It actually sounds like your rev limiter got reset from the 7000rpm area to the 3000rpm area. I could be totally wrong, but that's what it sounds like to me. So if I had to take a guess here, I'd say your ECU or some other electronic is messed up.

Re: Ok, I've got a challenge for you guys!

do a compression test, and a fuel pressure check at the rail. id guess either your gas froze in your pump or injectors and fucked it up, or your block possibly cracked.

will it go faster if you hold the pedal down to the floor for a few seconds? will it catch and start speeding up?

Re: Ok, I've got a challenge for you guys!

It's not a transmission problem, and I've tried flooring it and it almost stals in neutral, and when im driving and I floor it, it will reach that certain speed and start to jump around like crazy and not go any faster. I just got back from another mechanic that didnt know what it was, all he knew was that it had nothing to do with the fuel pump, or filters. He was telling me that there was a lot of problems with cars coming from the States, because of what happened in New Orleans (I have no idea if it came from there, all I know is that it was bought in an auction from the States, I dont know where though). But he told me it was some "thing" that connects to the computer, I cant remember what its called. It's basically some little metal thing that would cost about $1500 new. I have no idea. He told me to take it to the Nissan dealership and pay them a couple $100 to tell me whats wrong with it and take it back to him and he will fix it. Or to park it!

Re: Ok, I've got a challenge for you guys!

sounds like the air flow meter took a dump. older cars wont accelerate over a certain rpm, acts just like the rev limiter, when it craps out (failsafe). but you would need someone with the right diagnostic tools to confirm that.

Re: Ok, I've got a challenge for you guys!

jesus christ even an ecu isnt 1500$...
but also a crapped out MAF sounds correct also.

how about this one...heres a stumper for you guys.

91 maxima, runs on only 5 cylinders, after it warms up, tons of smoke at idle, smells like gas, not a ton of smoke while driving, also from time to time it will stumble hard under about 3500 rpm, after that it accelerates more normal, still on only 5 cylinders. compression is normal, all injectors work, just replaced cap/rotor/plugs/wires, spark on all cylinders. any other q's ill answer. i did finally figure out what the problem is so ill tell you if your right.

Re: Ok, I've got a challenge for you guys!

your car is in "limp mode" disconnect your negative battery terminal for a night and then try cranking it and letting it idle for about 15 min before driving

Ok, just ignore that last question, Im pretty sure you would have to reconnect it to complete the circuit. lol But I do have another question. What exactly is 'limp mode', and how would a car go into that mode?
