Can't reverse, only drive in 2nd gear

Hi all. This is my first time posting here, hope someone can help. I have an automatic 1990 Infinity M30. The car will only drive forward in D and 2 so it's only driving in 2nd gear. Can't go in reverse. There is no difference between P R N or 1, can't feel a shift or anything, it's like the car is in park in all of them. In N I can only push the car forward, but not in reverse. In R I can hear a slight rattling noise. The transmission fluid seems fine and doesn't smell burnt. Would this problem need a new transmission? rebuild? or could it be somthing else? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Can't reverse, only drive in 2nd gear

is the check engine/transmission light on?

and is it an electronicly control transmission?

i had a similar situation where it would only drive in 3rd but reverse worked. it was the computer's safe mode because i blew the fuse to the tranny controler.

if it isnt a computer controled tranny take off the fluid pan pan and see if there are any debris on the bottom.

hopefully it isnt something major
good luck,

chris

Thanks for the quick reply. I believe it is electronically controlled. I'll check the fuses and see if any are out.
