Cat converter replacement 93 3.1 ?
Was wondering if anyone changed there own converter and which brand did you use ? I am considering either the Catco # 4137 or Magnaflow # 23480. Both state direct fit .I would like to stay away from a universal with adapter pipes on the ends.
Thnaks in advance, Phillip |

Re: Cat converter replacement 93 3.1 ?
can you believe that in the cities in my state, people actually climb under vehicles with a hack saw, and hack off the cat converter on cars? Then they sell it as scrap. Apparently there are some precious metals inside cats that scrap houses will pay a pretty penny for. Not a bad business to get into, huh? j/k

Re: Cat converter replacement 93 3.1 ?
Have you seen the ones listed on ebay ? The asking prices seem a bit high to me for a recycled cat converter just to further recycle it for the precious metal inside.
Phillip ps I'm suprised that hardly anyone responded to my question.....I guess you guy's have had no problems or had an exhaust shop do it ? One guy in the granPrix forum mentioned a Magnaflow to another person. |

Re: Cat converter replacement 93 3.1 ?
I've never really had to replace one. If I were to though i'd go to the chevy dealer. Or at least from an ac-delco retalier and get an oe replacement. You may also want to smack the muffler with a rubber mallet and listen for anything rattling. I've seen cats plug and disintegrate sending fragments down the exhaust pipe straight into the muffler, plugging it up also. You will also have to find out why the cat converter plugged up in the first place. They have no moving parts so in theory should last the life of the car. Whether the cause was an excessivly rich or lean mixture, you'll defenatly want to repair this before you replace anything so you dont burn out another cat converter.

Re: Cat converter replacement 93 3.1 ?
I had my cat. replaced a couple of years ago. It was plugged up bad! Whenever I'd stop (like in a drive thru) it would rattle/vibrate like hell. I had an exhaust shop do the work. I think it was just a universal. No problems yet
