Starting Problem

I have a 96 4Runner that is starting sporatically. If I move the shifter out of park into nuetral and back a few times it will turn over but it is not 100%. Vehicle has a new battery and the starter is good. Is this one of the safety switches gone bad?

Re: Starting Problem

Try just turning the key numerous times and see if that gets it to work, or do you absolutely need to move the shifter.

It is possible you don't have to move the shifter and you are just seeing the effect of trying the key multiple times and moving the shifter has no effect.

If trying the key only gets it to start eventually, then it is likely that it is your solenoid contacts need replacing. Bad contacts would cause your truck to start unpredicably as you describe.

If moving the shifter repeatedly is the only way to get it to start, then it is likely that your problem is the neutral safety switch.
